Students at Zablocki School have been helping their schoolyard grow! 🌱💚 Earlier this month, Girls on the Run of Southeastern Wisconsin kicked off a service project at Milwaukee Public Schools' Zablocki School to care for the school's sensory garden by removing unwanted plants, preparing the soil, and planting sensory-friendly favorites like lavender, lemon balm, sage, rosemary, and lamb’s ear alongside pollinator-friendly species such as bee balm, columbine, and anise hyssop.

We later returned with additional elementary students to help complete the project. Through planting, litter cleanup, sensory observation activities, and nature journaling, students worked together to restore this special space and support the original vision of the sensory garden: a calming outdoor area where students can connect with nature and recharge on Zablocki’s Green & Healthy Schoolyard.

🌿📦 Five more Outdoor Discovery Carts were just delivered to Milwaukee Public Schools!

This year, Reflo assembled and delivered Outdoor Discovery Carts for Fifty-Third Street School, Cass Street School, Grant School, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School, Milwaukee French Immersion School, and Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

The cart are outfitted with tools and supplies useful for tending school garden beds and native planting areas with the goal of promoting environmental stewardship in students. Outdoor education supplies such as whiteboard clipboards, science tool kits with a variety of observational tools, and starter activity plans are included to facilitate outdoor learning with dedicated supplies available to use when conducting lessons outside of the traditional classroom. The carts were originally designed by Reflo and Milwaukee Public Schools high school interns!

We’re excited to see how students and educators use these resources to connect with nature, build stewardship skills, and bring learning outdoors. 🌱☀️

With warmer weather returning to Milwaukee, environmental education field trips are back in full swing at Green Tech Station! 📚🌿 This spring, Reflo welcomed students from Hawley Environmental School, Marvin E. Pratt Elementary School, Ralph Waldo Emerson School, and Lowell Elementary School to explore this hands-on outdoor learning space.

During their visits, students made nature observations, explored green infrastructure features like bioswales, trees, and Wisconsin native plants, and learned how these systems help capture and clean stormwater in our communities while supporting greener, healthier schoolyards. 🌱💧

Reflo’s beloved Workshop Manager, Tyann, is heading west next week to take part in Race To Alaska! She will be sailing 750 miles from Port Townsend, WA to Ketchikan, AK on a Wa’apa outrigger canoe that she built herself.
