Bishop Paul Erickson has now returned from his recent trip to visit our partners in the Diocese of Meru, Tanzania, along with Julie Starks, Pastor Kevin Kretzmann Farrar, and Pastor Alissa Kretzmann Farrar. Bishop Erickson participated in their Diocesean Assembly, at which they elected a new Bishop, Pastor Ndelekwa Pallangyo, and a new Assistant to the Bishop, Pastor Abel Kaaya. Bishop Elias Kitoi Nasari will be retiring in January.

The delegation then participated in a three-day consultation with other leaders from the ELCA and the ELCT, during which they explored how to deepen and expand our partnership. Presiding Bishop Yehiel Curry has released a statement on the SCOTUS immigration decisions.

“We are a people shaped by the Word of God, called by the apostle Paul to “welcome one another … just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God” (Romans 15:7). As Lutherans, we confess a faith that compels us to welcome and protect the vulnerable, to honor the dignity God gives every human being, and to uphold laws and policies that provide refuge to those fleeing violence, persecution and profound hardship.”

Bishop Curry's latest message, "America at 250: Holding gratitude and humility," focuses on our civic responsibility and moral role as Americans and Lutherans when it comes to the vision of equality present in the Declaration of Independence. "As citizens, we confess the ways we have not yet realized the vision of the Declaration of Independence and, more importantly, as Christians we confess the ways we have participated in or been complicit in failures to live into the vision God provides. This vision is rooted in creation and redemption. God crafts each person in God’s own image and sends Jesus Christ to redeem us, setting us free to follow Christ’s new commandment to love one another..."
