THE DENNIS PRICE JR. FOUNDATION
Dennis Price Jr. aka DJ was born on June 7, 1997, in Memphis, TN. DJ began playing basketball at the early age of four. He was an all-around athlete, exceptionally good at basketball, baseball, and bowling. But his love for the game of basketball was greater. He played both in school and summer league basketball for more than 10 years, which consisted of a lot of time, training, and travel.
At an early age, DJ’s dad told him that if he worked hard, he could become one of the greatest basketball players in the city and maybe even the country. DJ worked hard year after year. He listened to his dad and his coaches. He played with and against the best and ultimately became one of the best basketball players in the Mid-South and was on his way to being one of the greatest in the country.
DJ was so much more than just a popular student and basketball player at Ridgeway High School. He was an excellent student and friend with an infectious smile and personality. He was very well-mannered, and everyone loved him. He would often help less fortunate students with basic needs or just an encouraging word when they were down. His popularity never went to his head. He treated everyone with dignity and respect. He was a Christian and he lived as such.
Sunday morning, September 15th, 2013, DJ passed away in his sleep. His death rocked the city of Memphis and its basketball community. His parents, family and friends were all devastated. Dennis Price Jr passed away from the heart condition Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. This condition makes it difficult for the heart to properly pump blood and without thorough examination it often goes undetected. Despite the many physicals required throughout his lifetime, DJ’s condition regrettably went undiagnosed.
In honor of the life of DJ, The Dennis Price Jr. Foundation was founded on September 15, 2023.
Since September 15, 2023, we have served over 3,000 students through our programs such as DJ’s Care Close, Dennis Price Jr Scholarship Fund, Men of Clay, and CoverHer Heart.
It is our mission to care for the whole child by meeting basic needs, supporting health and well-being, and creating opportunities that enable every young person to learn, grow, and thrive with dignity.
