* Throwback Thursday *

Back in early 2006, Laurel Elementary School's 5th grade classes raised money to send to Hurricane Katrina victims following the devastating flood that hit New Orleans in August 2005. After experiencing Hurricane Helene here in WNC just 2 years ago, we now have an even better understand just how appreciated support like this is. Thank you to this group of Laurel Tigers for their hard work!

Thank you to The Otto Community Development Organization for allowing the Laurel Community Center and Spring Creek Community Center to attend this great training with WNC Communities and Justin Hamel. Step one for us in learning about GMRS and setting up our communities to be even more resilient in the next emergency.

*Throwback Thursday*

In less than two weeks, the Laurel Community Center has had 219 students visit our campus to learn about environmental science, ecology, and aquatic life here in our mountain streams.

On September 11th, Madison Early College High School brought their Trailblazers Club out to snorkel in Shelton Laurel Creek. Students also got to help collect kicknet samples and ID the macroinvertebrates they found too.

On September 15th & 16th, we hosted Madison County NC Soil & Water's 5th grade Conservation Days where 5th graders from Hot Springs Elementary, Brush Creek Elementary, Mars Hill Elementary School, and Woodson Branch Nature School got a chance to rotate between seven stations to learn about different careers in the environmental world, ways we can protect the natural world around us, all through hands on learning. Laurel Community Center's Vice President, Dr. Mary Kelly, and Executive Director, Cheoah Landis, led the Water Quality station where each kid got to see a healthy creek and learn what makes these creeks so clean and full of life. While the aquatic insect samples students got to sift through were full of macroinvertebrates, as always, the crawdads were the biggest hit!

On September 17th, Woodson Branch's 4th graders came and snorkeled Shelton Laurel Creek, sampled aquatic insects, and journaled about what they saw.

On September 23rd, North Buncombe High School brought an AP Environmental Studies class out to snorkel in Shelton Laurel Creek. Unfortunately snorkeling conditions were poor due to some much needed rain, but students enjoyed themselves nonetheless and had fun sifting through kicknet samples and IDing aquatic insects.

While our campus is no longer a school, we take pride in still providing educational experiences to local students, just in a different way than in years past. A huge thank you to all the students, teachers, educators, volunteers, and grantors that have helped make this all possible! This is all a dream come true.
