*Throwback Thursday*

This week's throwback is of the old rock school that was once Laurel High School. We think the second picture is so neat showing where the old rock school once stood in proximity to the buildings on campus today.

We know that the loss of this building was devastating to many in our community and we hope that by sharing it's stories it will forever live on in our community, even if only in memory.

We invite you to share your memories and stories of this building so that we can all learn more of it's history and an insight to what it was like back then! 💞

📢 📢 📢 CALLING ALL KIDS 📢 📢 📢

🏫 Come join us for our BACK-TO-SCHOOL Event at the Laurel Community Center on Friday, August 14th from 4 - 7 PM. 🏫

💳 💇 🍅 Each school aged child in attendance will receive a gift card, metal water bottle and are able to get a free hair cut too! We will also have our Food Pantry open for distribution to help families stock their pantries as the kids return to school.

🚒🎓 This year we are excited to be joined by the Laurel Fire Dept who will have fire trucks for the kids to explore and learn about and A-B Tech Madison who will be here providing resources and encouragement to students as they return to the classroom!

🍔 We will be grilling up hamburgers free for everyone and giving away frozen treats too!

📅 So, mark your calendars and come on out for our 3rd year of this great event to support our local youth and their educational journey.

The Laurel Community Center is excited to host the Laurel Foxes 4-H Club for their Car Wash Fundraiser coming up on Saturday, August 15th from 12 to 3 PM! Money raised will go towards the club's Christmas outing. Be sure to swing by and show them some support!

If you would like to support this fundraiser, but are unable to attend this event, you can mail a check to Madison County 4-H at 258 Carolina Lane, Marshall, NC 28753, with the memo "Laurel Foxes" ❤️

In June, the Laurel Community Center had the opportunity to host the Carolina Area Biologists Workshop (CABW). This event brought together biologists, engineers, and environmental professionals and educators from across the Southeast for a unique learning experience. CABW was designed to emphasize applied science and real-world problem solving and this year's workshop was no exception!

Participants from Clemson University, Appalachian State University, University of Georgia, Brevard College, UNC Charlotte and beyond, shared and presented research, pondered bigger questions, and connected with one another about the work they are doing to restore and protect aquatic systems throughout the region, and even world!

*Huge bonus* to have Shelton Laurel Creek in our back yard for such amazing field work too!

While many graduated from Laurel when it was a High School, others only attended when it was an Elementary School and then went on to graduate from Madison High School.

This week we were a stop on EcoVenture Madison's - GEAR UP Appalachian summer camp through A-B Tech Madison!

Although due to recent rains the creek was too high for everyone to explore, Dr. Mary still managed to find some great aquatic insect specimen for these local middle schools to ID and learn about. We love having all types of visitors on our campus but these groups of Madison county kiddos feel extra special to host. We can't wait to see you all again next summer!
