Our friends at the have some good work ahead! This hoop house currently sits in a mountain cove in Marshall, but will - piece by piece- be dismantled and rebuilt at their experimental farm in Leicester. This generous donation will allow them to grow so much more food next year! Give their account a follow if you don’t already.

We grew, prepared, and ate a lot of this summer, didn’t we, y’all? Please remember that every piece of produce we consume is situated within a complex network of people, places, and stories, past and present. This is certainly true for okra, an African-derived plant that culinary historian and writer, Michael Twitty , calls a “globetrotter,” a “Svengali,” a “spy with no shame always wearing the disguise of its last appearance.” To learn more about what Twitty meant, and why we should think deeply about this food and its connection to Black people & the African diaspora, give this episode a listen!

Lovely patch of
(200 plants!), with Mighty Gnome's Danielle Keeter and visitor Charles Wise -- "Johnny Okraseed" for SFA's Heritage Food Project. With thanks as ever to Chris Smith , and a shout out to and who have, since early Sep, taking all of Mighty Gnome's Aunt Hettie's harvest, to make delicious dishes for lucky Ashevillians! 📷: Cheryl Newman

Our friends at Bountiful Cities are doing important work in our communities — and they need our help! Today is the launch of a fundraiser initiative that would help to bolster their work in community & school gardens. The grant they are seeking would, among other things, allow them to start an apprenticeship program so they can pay the volunteers who currently work to help these gardens thrive!

We have donated to Bountiful Cities because we support their work to increase food security and resource sharing in underserved communities around Asheville and Buncombe County. If you have the means to contribute something too, please consider it. You can follow the link in our bio to learn more about Bountiful Cities and this fundraising campaign.

There are lots of tasty ways to prepare Aunt Hettie's Red from our heritage food project. Here is just one way to make some tasty oven baked okra for this Okra Black Eyed Pea Bowl.

Some okra seed saving tips from Chris Smith of :

If you are just growing one variety of okra then you can easily save seeds by allowing a few pods to grow large and turn brown on the stalk. The seeds inside will be dark and hard and can be kept dry and cool (in a glass jar) until next year.

If you have multiple varieties then watch this video from the Utopian Seed Project (link in profile!) on how to easily prevent cross pollination. You need 40 days from flowering to mature seeds, so now is the perfect time to isolate some flowers from cross pollination and still have time to develop mature seeds before the first frost.

A home gardener in Canton took this photo of Aunt Hettie’s Red okra growing strong in her garden! For those of you who didn’t grow okra this year, but are wondering where to get your hands on this variety - our annual Heritage Food Project - see our most recent blog post for a list of our partners. (Link in profile.) We need to support our local growers, markets, food entrepreneurs and culinary creatives - now and always!
