Woodson Branch Nature School

Woodson Branch Nature School Woodson Branch Nature School in Marshall, NC is an independent nature-based farm, art, and forest school offering PK-8th grades

With the generous support of donors, a deep pool of invested volunteers, and a clear demand for an earth and arts based learning environment for the children of this region, we opened our second location as an elementary and middle grades school in September of 2016 -- the Woodson Branch Nature School (WBNS). We offer full day curriculum and enrichment options. The participants in our programs hav

e access to an abundant 30 acres in rural Madison County, complete with rolling hills, a well-established blueberry orchard, apple trees, pasture, indoor classrooms, an 1800 sq. ft. 2-story tobacco barn, plus 20 acres of pristine forest with trails, multiple creeks and waterfalls that serve as the property border to the National Forest.

*Our Mission is to grow healthier communities by providing the most effective childhood education through physically engaging lessons and ample time in nature.

*It is our Vision to provide our students with an authentic well-rounded education intended to foster the confidence, creativity, and critical thinking skills they will need to be successful in the greater community. We currently provide preschool through middle grade with multiple leveled groups for English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics, and weekly “Specials” including: Science, Physical Education, Horticulture, Animal Care, The Arts, and Outdoor Education. Additionally, we provide additional enrichment programs (during the school day) offering STEAM Teams, middle School Clubs, financial management, maturity class, History, and Cultural Studies. Within their grade groups teaching staff rotate leading thoughtfully-crafted hands-ON experiential lessons, discussions, and research activities. With a solid 1:10 ratio, students get plenty of direct attention and teachers are able to assess and address their individual needs. At least 75% of our students are from low-income families. WBNS does offer a sliding scale tuition rate and is a recipient of the NC Opportunity Scholarship, making our school a viable option for working families. We are always accepting applications / resumes for employment for our professional teaching staff. Please email us to set up a Guided Tour >> [email protected]

We live in one of the oldest mountain ranges on the planet.

It’s hard to imagine that we hike mountains older than bones, but we do.

It’s so important to us that our kids get out there, learn & explore through being in it, and not only reading about it.

Creative leadership starts with a foundation in curiosity & exploration.

As a mama thinking about how to encourage a lifelong thirst for learning I’ve always been inspired by this quote:
“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire” -William Butler Yeats.

There’s no place I feel like this is more true both metaphorically and literally than at Woodson Branch Nature School.

Curious about whether WBNS is a good school fit for your family?
The tour our family took was an incredible experience.

We’d love to show you how we foster our kids in their academic and holistic journey.

We’d love to have you!

Together we will pinch, sculpt, press and roll clay to create one of a kind wares! Our program will begin with creating a bowl using slab and mold technique - then we will continue to build with slabs to create a sculptural relief to hang on the wall. These projects will provide a foundation in clay skills, as well as to engage our imagination.

Open to all 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th graders (and potentially other ages with approval), Art Club is all about getting crazy creative and experimenting with new materials! Students can expect to create with a variety of mediums including ink, paint, clay and fiber. After our 8 weeks of artistic fun, we will culminate the class with an art show for our parents in the barn!

🌞Thursdays: Find your Flow: Slacklining and Juggling Club with Mr. Danny
Grades 4-8
This club serves to give an introduction to both slacklining and juggling. We will go over slackline safety and the basics of how to sit, stand and walk across a slackline. Additionally, the class will offer an intro to juggling basics, with both scarves and balls to give an understanding of how to juggle 3 objects at a time.
