✨Virtual Lecture✨
Lineage: Genealogy and the Power of Connection in Early America
April 14 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm EST

Register here: https://www.annapolis.org/event/vls-lineage/

In 18th century America, genealogy was more than a simple record of family ties - it was a powerful force that shaped society. Ranging from handwritten notes to stone carvings, genealogical records wielded significant influence across governmental, legal, religious, cultural, and social spheres.

Discover how genealogy functioned as a powerful social tool in early America and why understanding these connections still matters today.

Family histories were deeply meaningful for diverse early Americans, but it was also baked into the very structures of their society through law, politics, and religion. From deep research across 18th century British America, Karin Wulf’s new book examines how we can understand the role of genealogy then, and its impact now.

The Historic Annapolis Virtual Lecture Series is offered free of charge thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor.

Happy Read Across America Week!
Today, we celebrate the power of reading—and the dedicated educators, librarians, and volunteers who help students discover its magic. Education has always been at the heart of the DAR’s mission. From supporting school libraries and donating classroom supplies to reading with students in local schools, members across the country generously give their time and talents to invest in the next generation of readers. These meaningful acts of service help spark a lifelong love of learning.

Many around the country this week are thinking about the people, places and events of the Revolutionary War thanks to the Burns documentary. Those stories and experiences of ordinary people affected by the events of the American Revolutionary War are also being shared in communities across the country thanks to a traveling exhibit presented jointly by American Battlefield Trust and DAR.

We are excited to share that we are extending the run of the American Revolution Experience Traveling Exhibit by two full years to tour through 2027! America’s upcoming 250th anniversary is a perfect opportunity to share lesser-known history of this era with local communities. The traveling exhibit has been seen by more than 70,000 people in all 50 states and we are thrilled to share it with even more communities!

The American Revolution is one of the most important events in human history. We went from being subjects to citizens, and set in motion democratic revolutions around the globe. It’s a great story – and hugely relevant to today. I hope you can watch. On PBS starting Nov. 16.

This is a wonderful opportunity. Virtual and free to anyone.

Happy Constitution Week! For nearly 70 years, the DAR has proudly led the way in championing September 17-23 as Constitution Week. The goals are as meaningful today as ever: to inspire citizens to cherish and protect the Constitution, to celebrate it as the foundation of our freedoms, and to encourage learning about the events that shaped its creation.

This week, we honor the principles that unite us as Americans. How will you be celebrating Constitution Week in your community?

Not too far away.

Join Us for the Overmountain Men Mural Dedication! 🎨🇺🇸

See the new mural by artist Daniel McAulay (Avery County High School art teacher) that honors the brave Overmountain Men as they crossed Yellow Mountain Gap on their march to the Battle of Kings Mountain. The Overmountain Men’s march and victory at Kings Mountain helped shift the Southern campaign of the Revolutionary War and is a defining moment in our region’s story - a powerful subject for public art and community remembrance.

Bring family and friends, snap photos with the mural, and stay after to talk with local historians. Questions? Email [email protected]
