Capital K9s welcomes a new member to the Madison Police Department: K9 Frost, a Golden Retriever who is the department’s first therapy dog. Frost and Officer Brian Vandervest will enhance officer well-being on a daily basis, respond to critical incidents, and offer comfort to all MPD staff during challenging and stressful situations. Frost is part of the Capital K9s program, which currently comprises eight dogs and their handlers. These dogs have proven invaluable to the department, assisting in locating missing individuals, apprehending suspects, and detecting narcotics and explosives. Now, the program can add therapy to that list.

Frost was trained by WAGS (Wisconsin Academy for Graduate Service Dogs) and purchased by Capital K9s. His veterinary care is courtesy of Sauk Point Veterinary Clinic and his food is provided by Raw Rations in Sauk City.

The Pins for Paws 2026 K9 Fundraiser is officially in the books—and what a great event it was! We packed the lanes once again with an incredible turnout of bowlers and sponsors. Thank you to everyone who participated, supported, or donated. Your generosity made a real impact.

A big thank-you to Waun-a-Bowl in Waunakee for hosting us again. Together, we raised $9,000 to support the Madison and Monona Police K9 teams.

K9 teams from both departments were on hand, along with Monona Police Chief Brian Chaney. We even had two enthusiastic civilian Labradors cheering on their favorite team. The raffle featured some fantastic prizes and added even more excitement to the day.

We can’t wait to see you next year! Up next for Capital K9s: our 4th Annual Golf Outing on August 17.

We are saddened to share the End of Watch for retired Madison Police K9 Allied at the age of 11.

K9 Allied began his career with the Madison Police Department on May 1, 2016, when he was partnered with Ofc. Jason Baumgart. For seven years they worked side by side serving the community. Allied worked his final shift on February 3, 2023, closing out a distinguished career.

During his time with MPD, Allied served as a patrol K9, assisting with narcotics detection and locating people. Like all police K9s, Allied was more than just a working dog — he was a trusted partner, protector, and loyal teammate to his handler and fellow officers.

After retiring from the department, Allied continued to live with Jason and family, enjoying life on a farm and spending his well-earned retirement with the partner he had served beside for so many years.

We would also like to extend a special thank you to Laura Harrington, whose generous sponsorship through Capital K9s made it possible for MPD to purchase Allied. Her support helped bring an incredible K9 to the department and ultimately to the community he served.

Allied’s distinguished career speaks to the dedication, teamwork, and bond shared between a K9 and their handler. Our thoughts are with Ofc. Baumgart as we remember Allied and the years they served together.

Rest easy, K9 Allied. Thank you for your service. 🐾

Up at ‘em K9 fans! K9 Freddie is already on the treadmill this morning taking a jog equivalent to a lap around the earth.

Fred is working out with his handler Ryan as he rehabilitates from his crash last year with a fleeing driver.

We'd like to say a big THANK YOU to the friendly folks over at Bio-One of Madison. These guys are super stars by supporting our golf outings, our bowling event, and are there whenever we put out a request for help. David, Angie and the crew are literally some of the nicest people you could ever meet.

In addition to all of the previously mentioned help, Bio-One of Madison also is a food supplier for Madison Police K9 Charlie and handler Steph Rynes.

Our community supporters are what keep our eight K9's in good health and as safe as possible throughout the year.
