✅ UPDATE (July 24): This issue has been resolved.

Our website security team has removed the ClickFix malware, completed a full cleanup of the site, and verified through multiple security scans that the website is now safe to use.

🚨🚨 The deadline is approaching to honor the best of Wisconsin's public sector!

Through July 31, we're accepting nominations for our Salute to Local Government awards (see link in comments). They honor excellence in local and state government, school districts and their employees across Wisconsin.

Salute award categories recognize outstanding performance by local governments and school districts for: innovative problem-solving, intergovernmental cooperation, advancing equity, or private-public cooperation.

In partnership with the La Follette School of Public Affairs: UW-Madison, we're excited to recognize excellence in innovation and/or management in state government. We also recognize public sector workers for individual excellence and as leader of the future.

YOU CAN HELP to recognize outstanding public servants across Wisconsin by offering your own Salute nominations -- and by spreading the word to others.

What an incredible way to kick off our 2026 WWIG Summer Series! A heartfelt thank you to our outstanding panelists, Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway, Diane Handrick, Jennifer Garrett, and former Senator Joan Ballweg, for their honesty, vulnerability, and wisdom as they shared the lessons they've learned from mistakes, setbacks, and embracing imperfection. A special thank you as well to our wonderful moderator, Richelle Andrae, for guiding such a thoughtful and engaging conversation.

Learn more about one of our special guests, Joan Ballweg!

🏆 Joan was born in West Allis, a UW- Stevens Point graduate where she met and married her husband Tom of 52 years. After a few years teaching, Joan and Tom bought a John Deere farm equipment dealership and are celebrating their 50th year in business, now with locations in Waupun and Beaver Dam. In addition to the business, Joan became involved in local civic service and served her hometown, Markesan for 10 years, 4 on the city council and 6 as Mayor.

In 2004, Joan was encouraged to run for an open Assembly seat, winning a 9-way Republican primary, was elected to the State Assembly. Joan served 20 years in the legislature, 16 years in the Assembly and 4 years in the State Senate. Joan served in leadership in both houses and on the Joint Finance Committee, as well as chairing legislative and study committees during her terms. She was involved in regional and national legislative organizations and served as Chair of the Midwest Legislative Council in 2016 and National Chair of the Council of State Governments in 2020 and 2021. Joan and Tom raised 3 adult children and have 4 grandchildren.

🏆 Diane Handrick has been a legislative aide in the Wisconsin State Assembly for over two decades. At the non-profit Wisconsin Technical College District Boards Association from 2021-2025, she led in various roles, including as Executive Director for a year. Other highlights include working for a U.S. Senator, being a retail manager, doing up north resort work and parenting. She has served as a Wisconsin Women in Government board member and volunteer. Her motto: "If you aren't making mistakes, you aren't working! Playing it too safe guarantees no progress."

🏆 Jennifer Garrett was appointed Deputy Secretary of DSPS in January 2025 after serving more than two years as the department's Assistant Deputy Secretary. Before that, she served as director of public affairs. Jennifer joined the department in July 2019 as communications director. She serves as the chief of staff for the Secretary, managing external affairs for DSPS including media, legislative, and external stakeholders. Additionally, Jennifer serves as the department liaison with the governor's staff and other agencies. Garrett is an Indiana native. She has a bachelor's degree in communications and English from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. She also earned her J.D. from the Indiana University School of Law in Bloomington, Indiana. Jennifer is also a former Board member for WWIG. Stay tuned for highlights on our other panelists!

🏆 Satya Rhodes-Conway is the 58th Mayor of Madison. Her administration is focused on providing high quality public services, affordable housing, rapid transit, equitable economic growth, and combating climate change. She has extensive experience in local policy and practice, having worked with mayors across the country for over a decade, and having served three terms on the Madison Common Council. Elected in 2019 and again in 2023, she is the city’s second female mayor and the first out LGBTQ person to serve as Mayor of Madison. Stay tuned for highlights on our other panelists!
