Alvin Jardine was wrongfully convicted of assault and kidnapping in Hawaii in 1992 after a misidentification. DNA from the scene was retested in 2009 with more advanced technology and the results excluded Jardine as a source. He was exonerated in 2011 but passed away last year before he received compensation for his nearly 19 years in prison.

Albert Debelbot was wrongfully convicted along with his wife, Ashley, after their 3-day-old baby was taken to the hospital when they noticed a bump on her forehead. The baby passed soon after. The medical examiner found bleeding in the brain and a skull fracture, and concluded that it was due to blunt force trauma. Both were sentenced to life in prison. Years later, experts determined that the baby was born with birth defects and experienced trauma from birth, leading to her death. They were exonerated in 2021 after over 10 years in prison.

N.J. needs a forensic science commission. Here’s why. | Opinion

“In the name of both public safety and the proper delivery of justice, the time is now for our state to create one of these commissions to ensure we have the right safeguards and accountability mechanisms for forensic science practitioners and crime laboratories.”

Advances in technology are transforming criminal justice, but without safeguards, they can also lead to wrongful convictions

Tony Carruthers is set to be executed tomorrow by the state of Tennessee. Although questions remain, Gov. Bill Lee has stated that he does not plan to intervene.

-Untested DNA evidence remains

-Tony was forced to represent himself at trial

-The medical examiner has since recanted
testimony that the victims were buried alive and that statement may have contributed to his death sentence

-No physical evidence links Tony to the murders

If you’d like to help, you can call Governor Bill Lee at 615-412-3133 to ask him to change his mind and stay Tony’s ex*****on. Use Nashville zip code 37206.

Oregon prosecutors said she didn’t protect her baby. She says she was surviving abuse.

“No one in the courtroom was suggesting Deborah, a 27-year-old new mother with no criminal history, had beaten or drugged her baby. Instead, [the prosecutor] said, Deborah knew Opal’s father had done it — but she didn’t step in.”

Even in states like Oregon without an explicit “failure to protect” law, abused mothers can face prison time
