Last year alone, through FSH Resources, we connected nearly a quarter of a million individuals to the free resources they needed. These included both critical resources around housing, medical care, transportation and food insecurity, as well as life changing resources to help them overcome significant obstacles and plan a path toward a better future for themselves and their families.

We know - summer just started! But when it comes to donations, we’re already thinking about back-to-school items. If you want to support Family Scholar House kids, they would love for you to donate school supplies for all ages. Agendas, calendars and notebooks in particular are much sought after! Donated items can be dropped off Monday through Friday from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm at Louisville Scholar House, 403 Reg Smith Circle in Louisville. And remember — you can always shop on Amazon and have those donated items shipped directly to Family Scholar House. However you donate, thank you for helping our participant families succeed!

Imagine a cooperative effort between healthcare providers and educators — one that provides work-based learning experiences and shared support for students pursuing a health care track, while helping to meet the workforce needs of understaffed rural and urban health care facilities. That’s FSH HealthCorps, a partnership between Family Scholar House and AmeriCorps and the CDC through the Public Health AmeriCorps Program.

In our first two years, FSH Health Corps has placed 339 members in non-profit long-term care facilities and hospitals across 9 states. In our first year alone, 79% of members earned a credential or degree during their year of service. Overall, 62% are female, 37% identify as a racial minority, and 22% live in rural areas of the state. 71% of members are enrolled in an educational program.

Today, we honor Juneteenth—a day that commemorates freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equity and opportunity.

At Family Scholar House, we recognize that freedom is more than a moment in history. It is the ability to pursue an education, provide for your family, achieve economic stability, and create a brighter future for the next generation. Every day, we work alongside families who are breaking barriers through higher education, building generational wealth, and creating lasting change in their communities. As we celebrate Juneteenth, we reflect on the progress that has been made while acknowledging the work that remains to ensure every family has access to the opportunities they deserve.

This Sunday is Father’s Day, and while the vast majority of our student parents are moms, we have our share of dads as well. Here Michael, a recent graduate and Family Scholar House participant, shares his story. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there!

The Stoddard Johnston School was built in 1915. In 2012, it took on a new life as The Stoddard Johnston Scholar House to provide affordable Section 8 housing and support services for single parents (and their children) who are pursuing a college degree.

The renovated elementary school at 2301 Bradley Avenue in Louisville, plus two newly-constructed buildings, provide a total of 57 affordable apartments, a playground, parking and an onsite academic services center with space for academic advising, case management, a media lab, a sensory room, a community meeting space and even office space for use by community programs serving the neighborhood. Residents benefit from a safe, peaceful, family-focused atmosphere that blends comfort, community and the resources to support academic success.

We simply couldn’t do what we do or serve the number of people we serve without the generous support of so many volunteers. Here’ volunteer Darrell Brookins to talk about why he makes time to support the work of Family Scholar House.

If you’d like to join Daryl in volunteering, here are a couple of opportunities available right now. You can learn more and volunteer at https://familyscholarhouse.org/volunteers/

Linda’s Closet Organization: Support our families by helping sort, organize, and prepare donated clothing and essentials in Linda’s Closet, ensuring participants have access to professional and everyday wear.

Create content for FSH’s online learning: Do you have a skill, tip, or life lesson that could help another family? Family Scholar House has an Online Learning lab filled with quick, practical lessons created by community members, volunteers, and supporters like you. Volunteers can contribute a simple 5-minute lesson on almost any topic—big or small.

MyKY.info is a free app designed by Family Scholar House to help individuals quickly find the resources they need. It’s available to anyone with internet access, and at strategically placed kiosks in high-traffic areas. It provides a wide range of free resources, including food pantries, clothing banks, homeless shelters, rent and transportation assistance, legal help, educational support, medical services, and more. It also offers options for “Crisis Lines and Safe Places” and “Live Help.” The latter connects users with specialists at Family Scholar House’s Trager Response Center for non-emergency support. The app has a language option so users can switch between English, Spanish and French.

We’re so proud of Natasha, who graduated this year from Elizabethtown Community and Technical College and has already secured a job, all while raising two beautiful children. In this video she not only talks about her path to success, the ways in which Family Scholar House was able to support her, and the importance of having the courage to ask for help.
