YPR - Louisville, KY YPR Louisville has continued the momentum for another year! We are very welcoming to new attendees and really emphasize inclusivity.

YPR’s mission is to provide the life skills and peer supports that young people need to thrive and be successful in long-term recovery from addiction to drugs and alcohol. The YPR Louisville, KY chapter is one of the most established chapters in the history of the organization. Our approach has been widely successful due to seamless collaboration with the already thriving recovery community as a whole. The strategy we have found is focused on consistency with hosting bi-weekly pro-social events that have been well attended for almost 9 years; Ultimate Frisbee in the summer and Recovery Dodgeball in the winter. The Louisville chapter has several different sub committees made up of people in various stages of their recovery journeys. We have a group of volunteers who commit to monthly Community Clean Ups which consist of picking up hazardous paraphernalia off the streets of downtown while distributing Narcan and Fentanyl test strips. We bring the YPR Overview workshop into inpatient treatment centers quarterly to promote our recovery support services and help recruit new chapter members. We have a crew of Recovery hiking leaders that plan different locations to meet up and hike about once a month. We have a wonderful volunteer Deepak Chopra certified Meditation facilitator Charlotte who leads a virtual meditation for our group every two weeks on Zoom. What we have formed here in Louisville is what we call our "YPR family", we all see each other at least once a week at our weekly All Recovery Meetings and chat in a private Facebook messenger group all day everyday. Our meetings are held at the Louisville Recovery Community Connection which is a state of the art Recovery Community Center in the heart of downtown that we helped to plan and open a few years back. Our chapter has annual chili cook offs, Recovery Super Bowl parties, Derby parties, costume parties for Halloween, Friendgivings, and Ugly Christmas Sweater parties. The public YPR Louisville page has nearly 3,000 followers and we pride ourselves on being detail oriented when it comes to social media promotion for all our resources and current events in the community. We host resource tables at various events throughout the year where we help recruit and engage the community. The Louisville YPR chapter has been featured on dozens of news stories throughout the years ranging from Recovery Snowtubing, Recovery Concert Bonfires, and Unity BBQs where we teamed up with local law enforcement to help smash the stigma between people with substance use disorder and the police. I cannot emphasize enough that our chapter's upward momentum and success has been a team effort and without the many hard working volunteers, there would be no YPR family here that many of us have come to know and love.

Today's featured Recovery Summit presenter is Savvy Shabazz!

Savvy is an experienced advocate for justice reform for current and formerly incarcerated individuals. He has over 10 years of experience in community engagement and partnerships that led to him being awarded the Community Peace Award in 2023. He is currently the West Louisville Chapter Lead at Young People in Recovery, where he developed the chapter, recruits and develops programming, and implements community events.

Savvy's presentation, Bridging the Gap Between Reentry & Recovery, is a powerful, lived-experience-driven presentation, designed to highlight the critical connection between successful reentry and sustained recovery. Savvy's presentation explores how individuals returning from incarceration often face overlapping challenges, including substance use, mental health barriers, unemployment, housing instability, and stigma and why addressing these issues in isolation leads to gaps in long-term success.

Through personal testimony, real-world examples, and community-based solutions, this session emphasizes the importance of integrating reentry services with recovery support systems. Participants will gain insight into how life skills development, peer support, employment readiness, civic engagement, and access to resources can create a pathway to stability and transformation.

This presentation also highlights the work of Life Coach Each One Teach One Reentry Fellowship and Savvy Shabazz Solutions, LLC, showcasing innovative strategies that “bridge the gap” by meeting people where they are and walking alongside them toward sustainable success.

On Save a Life Day, 70+ volunteers with our Louisville chapter and the Cardinal Grace Foundation handed out 4,812 doses of life-saving naloxone at 24 locations across Jefferson County.

Recovery community doesn't just support individuals. It strengthens neighborhoods.

Louisville Recovery Community Connection has partnered with Commonwealth Center for Fathers & Families to host bi-monthly meetings in which we address barriers that Fathers Face in becoming the best version of themselves.

We want to invite all of our friends to join us for our Fathers Convening December 3rd, led by Fathers Academy Graduate , Josh Vogler.

Also we are excited to participate in the Fatherhood Symposium tomorrow as a featured partner if you are there stop by and see Daniel Harvey and learn more about what we do and how it can be replicated in your community !

Today's featured Recovery Summit presenter is Michelle Burns!

Michelle is an experienced budget and grant professional, having previously worked for the University of Kentucky as a contracting officer and value analysis coordinator and for Save the Children Federation as a senior budget and planning advisor. In her current role, she serves as a grant specialist for the Kentucky Opioid Abatement Advisory Commission, tracking funding, expenditures, and progress toward grant objectives.

At the Recovery Summit, Michelle, along with Hallie Mattingly, will give an overview of grants and impact that have come about via funding from opioid settlements that the Kentucky Opioid Abatement Advisory Commission has disbursed. We are excited to hear how these grants have impacted the state positively and we hope that you are too!
