La Dolce Vita guests will get a rare behind-the-scenes tour of Hotel Dieu. You will see our senior apartments, walk through the dining hall, and step inside our beautiful chapel to view stunning stained-glass windows salvaged from a historic church in Santa Barbara. Last Friday, we celebrated the Feast of St. Vincent de Paul with our Hotel Dieu residents by sharing delicious potato soup and performing "The Basket Isn't Big Enough". The play reminded us of a powerful lesson from our founder. He taught us that "love of the poor is not proven by one generous afternoon, but by a love that organizes itself to endure".

Today, our volunteers carry on that exact same organized love by ensuring our seniors receive reliable, daily nourishment rather than occasional support. Every time we knock on a door, we are keeping a promise that started centuries ago.

Our incredible team traded their daily routines for the stage last Friday!

We gathered with our wonderful Hotel Dieu residents to share warm bowls of potato soup and watch our staff perform a special short play called "The Basket Isn't Big Enough".

The story took us back to August 1617 in Chatillon, France. When a local family fell entirely ill, the parish rushed to help, but they brought so much food in a single day that it was bound to spoil. Father Vincent de Paul stepped in, realizing that one day of thirty baskets does a family much less good than one basket a day for thirty days. He gathered the parish women to organize a rotation, ensuring the sick family had consistent, daily care and human connection.

We want to give a massive shoutout to the talented staff who brought these historical figures to life! Swipe through the photos to see our cast in action. Their performance was a beautiful reminder of why we show up every single day to deliver steady meals and wellness checks to our homebound seniors.

It all started with a Pot of Soup.

Did you know that Los Angeles's incredible spirit of giving was planted by the Vincentian family over a century ago?

Decades ago, our organization grew directly from this Vincentian calling. Sister Alice Marie, a Daughter of Charity and Registered Dietitian, noticed that older adults were being discharged from the hospital with no one to cook for them at home. She took immediate action and began preparing warm, nutritious meals right in the hospital kitchen. As she famously recalled, "It all started with a pot of soup."

To honor the Feast of St. Vincent de Paul and the incredible legacy of Sister Alice Marie, our team spent last Friday sharing warm bowls of potato soup with all of our staff and the wonderful residents of Hotel Dieu.

Today, we proudly carry on this 400-year legacy of actionable compassion by delivering food and vital wellness checks to homebound seniors across Los Angeles. By supporting our mission, you are continuing a powerful history of local charity that has defined our beautiful city since its earliest days.

He knew traditional methods of charity were no longer enough, and true love required boundless innovation. We proudly bear his name today because his 400-year legacy of actionable compassion remains our daily blueprint!

Nothing compares to the warmth of family gathered around a beautifully set table.

As you can see in our latest video, we are bringing that exact feeling of togetherness to life! Join us on Saturday, October 10, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM for La Dolce Vita, a special evening under the stars to support St. Vincent Meals on Wheels. This beautiful night officially kicks off our monumental 50th anniversary celebrations.

We are transforming the Hotel Dieu courtyard right here on our campus into a cozy Nona's backyard. This event offers a rare opportunity to experience the heart of our mission firsthand. You will have the chance to tour our kitchen, see our senior housing, and meet some of our amazing Hotel Dieu senior residents! Afterward, we will gather as one big family to enjoy an incredible Italian dinner prepared by our very own Cordon Bleu-trained Chef Carlos. The dress code is "Italian al fresco," so please come dressed comfortably for a relaxed night of philanthropy and community.
