Wild Up progressive noise makers. We make music. New music. Old music. We’ll play it, as long as we love it.

wild Up is a modern music collective - a group of Los Angeles-based musicians committed to creating visceral, thought-provoking happenings. Our programs are eclectic studies of people, places, and ideas that we find interesting. The group believes that music is a catalyst for shared experiences, and that the concert venue is a place for challenging, exciting, and igniting the community around us.

Democracy Sessions continues at REDCAT with The Room Begins to Rise. 💫

Wild Up and REDCAT (Roy and Edna Disney CalArts Theater) present the world premiere of a newly commissioned work by Wild Up member Shelley Washington, created for Wild Up musicians, CalArts students, and The Collective Orchestra, Wild Up’s community ensemble.

What kind of energy emerges when people gather around a shared experience? The Room Begins to Rise takes Émile Durkheim’s idea of “collective effervescence” as inspiration for a performance that asks what music can teach us about being together.

Through a flexible score of notation, text, images, and prompts, musicians of all backgrounds are invited to listen, experiment, and make decisions together. At REDCAT, collective action takes shape as performers and audience blur the boundaries between exchange and participation.

🎺130 performers. One enormous sounding body.

Democracy Sessions opens with the U.S. premiere of Oliver Leith’s Garland, 2025, presented by The Museum of Contemporary Art and Wild Up.

A large-scale, site-responsive work, Garland transforms The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA into both stage and instrument. Musicians and community voices move through the space alongside handmade instruments and everyday materials: corrugated plastic straws, whirly tubes, bicycles, ceramic shards, and even a horse adorned with a garland of bells. 🔔✨

📅 Saturday, October 3

Gay Guerrilla in The New York Times!🌟

“… the finale section — in which the march rhythm builds to a climax of tremendous emotional power before ebbing away — can be heard as a last, defiant statement of commitment to Eastman’s being wholly himself amid a world in which he was always an outsider.”

Thanks for the feature David Weininger, and thrilled to be in such good company!

An excerpt from The Backyard 🏠🌳, episode 7 of Robert Ashley’s cult TV opera Perfect Lives.

Created for television in the early 1980s, Perfect Lives remains one of Ashley’s most celebrated (and rarely performed) works: part opera, part spoken storytelling, part hypnotic and surreal musical landscape.

Last season, Wild Up brought Episode 1: The Park and 7: The Backyard to life at The Nimoy as part of The Center is Between Us, featuring live narration by .

The Odes traced a living lineage of musical experimentation, reminding us that sometimes the oldest music sounds most like the future. 💫

One week later!

Since its release last Friday, Gay Guerrilla has been reviewed by , featured on ’s New Music Friday, and sparked some thoughtful reviews and collaborations. We’re so grateful to all who have listened and shared! And if you haven’t yet, what are you waiting for?!
