Here’s what’s happening:

📱 Electronics Recycling with EverTech Recycling. Bring unwanted electronics for responsible recycling.

👕 Textile Recycling with Bay State Textiles. Keep unwanted clothing and textiles out of the trash.

🧥 South Asian Clothing Swap hosted by Indian Americans of Lexington (IAL). Exchange clothing, find something new to you, and extend the life of your wardrobe.

🎓 Graduation Gown Reuse to give gowns another chance to be worn instead of discarded.

And that’s just one part of the fair! Meet local organizations, explore practical sustainability solutions, and connect with neighbors working to reduce waste in our community.

Save Mass Save!!! Stop GSEP!! were the rallying cries on Wednesday at the State House. You can join virtually by signing LexCAN's message to our elected officials: https://tinyurl.com/LexCAN-affordability The legislative conference committee is now forging a compromise "Energy Affordability" bill. When ANYONE saves ($ and energy) with Mass Save, EVERYONE SAVES because expensive peak energy is avoided. Systemic change by forcing gas companies to safely repair rather than putting in new pipes (GSEP) reduces cost for what we hope will be an obsolete commodity. Both of these moves have huge climate implications!

Thanks to everyone who joined us in August. We sent 240 postcards to Virginia voters encouraging environmentally-minded voters to make their voices heard this November.
Now, we’re turning our attention to Texas!
Join us on October 6 for our next postcard-writing event. We’ll provide the postcards, stamps, and supplies. All you need to bring is yourself and a little time to make a difference.

LexCAN is proud to announce that we have been awarded $48,000 through the Mass Clean Energy Center’s EmPower Massachusetts program!

This funding will support our work to expand access to clean energy programs through culturally and linguistically tailored outreach and support for residents who face language barriers.

We believe everyone should have access to the information, resources, and opportunities they need to participate in the clean energy transition. This award will help us strengthen that work and reach more members of our community.

We’re grateful to the Mass Clean Energy Center for investing in community-led solutions that make clean energy more accessible across Massachusetts.

What if some of the glass we throw away could help build what comes next?

Researchers and engineers are exploring ground glass pozzolan (GGP)—a fine powder made from recycled glass that can replace a portion of Portland cement in concrete.

Why is that exciting? Portland cement production is a significant source of CO₂ emissions, while incorporating waste glass can both reduce cement use and divert glass from landfills. Research also suggests that properly processed glass powder can provide strength and durability benefits.

But it isn't quite as simple as putting glass in concrete. When larger glass pieces are used as aggregate, they can trigger alkali-silica reaction (ASR), a chemical reaction that can cause concrete to deteriorate. Fortunately, mitigation strategies—including using supplementary cementitious materials—can significantly reduce the risk.

It’s a good reminder that sustainability isn’t always about finding a perfect solution. It’s about continuing to find smarter ways to use resources, reduce waste, and lower emissions.

The Massachusetts Legislature is currently working to finalize the Environmental Bond Bill, and there’s an important opportunity to reduce single-use plastics in our state.

The Senate-approved version, S.3064, includes provisions to:
• Limit plastic bags
• Address black plastic
• Reduce smaller single-use hotel toiletry bottles
• Study a potential ban on polystyrene foam

Unfortunately, these provisions were removed from the House version, H.5510.

Now, a six-member Joint Conference Committee is working to reconcile the two bills. This is the moment to make your voice heard.

📣 TAKE ACTION: Contact your Massachusetts legislators and urge them to keep the Senate-approved language reducing single-use plastics in the final Environmental Bond Bill.

Here is a sample message:

"As we venture outside on these glorious summer days, one thing remains constant throughout the seasons: Single-use plastic pollutes our beaches, streets, rivers and stunning coastline. Scientists estimate that 33 billion pounds of plastic enter the ocean every year. That is roughly the same as dumping two garbage trucks worth of plastic into the ocean every minute. Approximately 16,000 chemicals are used to make plastic. Three quarters of them have never been tested for toxicity. And marine animals – many of which are endangered – are consuming or becoming entangled in the plastic flooding our oceans. If plastic production continues to grow at the current rate, by 2050 it is estimated that there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish.

Massachusetts is woefully behind neighboring states with tackling our plastic pollution problem, but the state Legislature can make progress this year. Our state leaders must ensure the final environmental bond bill includes limits on single-use plastic bags, tiny hotel toiletry bottles and other plastics as well as require a study on polystyrene, one of the most problematic plastics. Thank you."
