For five Saturdays from March to May, high school students from across the Metropolitan Boston area participated in the Lincoln Laboratory Radar Introduction for Students Engineers (LLRISE): Spring Session program. Students assembled a small systems radar, learned about pulse compression and ranging, and designed their own experiments.

Thank you for making this program possible!

LLRISE: Spring Session is an abridged version of the full summer program which is a two-week residential program for rising high school seniors from across the country. LLRISE 2024 is scheduled to begin this Sunday, July 14, 2024.

High school cadets from the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps Massachusetts Bay Division build and test remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) at the Laboratory’s test pool in preparation for the SeaPerch competition. Special guest speaker, Lt. Julie Stabile, provided a talk on nuclear ballistic missile submarines which inspired the cadets when working on ballasting their designs.

Science Petty Officer First Class Akshayram Sivakumar, who has participated in the program for several years and is the leader of the SeaPerch team, speaks on his experience: “Working with the team through trial and error has been a very rewarding experience… it is very fulfilling when the final ideal balance is reached for the submersed ROVs so our team can begin the next step. The creativity and freedom in designing the vehicles are what genuinely appeal to me.”

This past weekend, over 50 middle school girls visited the Lincoln Laboratory to participate in the Girls’ Innovation Research Laboratory (G.I.R.L.) Forensic Science workshop. Participants analyzed their own handwriting and fingerprint samples, used chromatography to analyze different ink samples, microscopes to analyze hair and fabrics, and chemistry to identify different substances.

The workshop was lead by Laboratory staff. Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and thank you to our sponsors and Air and Space STEM Outreach!

I’m addition to the rocket launch, Lincoln Laboratory staff also provided hands-on demonstrations at the Empower Yourself event. They explained the physics behind spacecraft dynamics, including angular momentum, and also helped attendees create “lightsabers” out of simple house hold objects by teaching them how to create a simple circuit.

For the past year, two Laboratory staff members have mentored students from Brockton High School’s Aerospace Robotics Competition team.

On Saturday, October 15, Empower Yourself, an organization that offers academic curriculum and programs that focus on financial and economic literacy, life skills, and the exploration of the fields in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), hosted a rocket launch competition and science fair to celebrate the students’ hard work. Six teams launched their rockets at Brockton High School, with volunteer judges from the Lincoln Laboratory evaluating their launch, presentation, and design.

Instructor shout out to Ariel Hamlin who spearheaded LLCipher efforts this year!

Ariel is a technical staff member in the Secure Resilient Systems and Technology Group here at the MIT Lincoln Laboratory, where she pursues her interests in cryptography and coding by developing cryptographic prototypes. Her current projects focus on cryptographically securing databases by using technologies such as searchable symmetric encryption and property-preserving encryption.

Thank you Ariel for all your hard work and your dedication to outreach!
