Last month was National Su***de Prevention Awareness Month. At Eliot Community Human Services, we think about this work year-round.

Over the past several years, Eliot has built out the Zero Su***de framework across our clinical programs β€” a model that treats su***de as something that can be prevented through better training, follow-up, and consistent care, rather than a fixed outcome. It’s anchored by several evidence-based methodologies, including CAMS (Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality), and supported by an internal committee of staff who keep refining how it works in practice.

Since 2019, almost 300 of our clinicians have completed foundational training in this model, and our teams have completed more than 33,000 individualized safety plans with clients. This year, the Zero Su***de committee introduced new tools to help clinicians catch risk earlier and support each other in using those tools well.

Eliot Community Human Services is proud to be one of the first nonprofit, community-based care providers in the Bipolar Action Network (BAN) β€” connecting patients, families, clinicians, and researchers nationwide to improve care for people living with bipolar disorder.

BAN is now accepting applications from new care centers through November 1, 2026. If you know a clinic or organization that treats people living with bipolar disorder, please share this opportunity with them.

Last week, Eliot honored 6 outstanding staff members who were nominated by their colleagues and selected for the annual Kate Markarian Awards. These awards recognize the legacy of Kate Markarian, Eliot's President & CEO for over three decades.

Pictured from left to right are: Kathleen O'Connor (Developmental Disabilities Program), Victoria Markham (Social Services Program), Alijah Leombruno (Wraparound Program), Andrea Graham (Homeless Services Division), Leticia DeMello (Healthy Families Program), and Kerri Loftus (Mental Health Division).

Congratulations to these individuals!

We also celebrated Maura Kelleher, Community Relations Specialist, with the first ever Heart of Eliot Award. Maura's tireless commitment to making a difference in our communities represents the core of our values and purpose.

And a special thank you to all this year's nominees, and our dedicated Eliot staff organization-wide, who show up every day in ways both big and small to accomplish our shared mission.

This is Recovery Month, and we want to introduce you to Emilie Grant, one of our Recovery Coaches at Eliot Community Human Services.

Emilie has been part of the Eliot team for five years. She works alongside clinicians, prescribers, nurses, peer specialists, and therapists β€” meeting every morning to plan care together for the people they serve.

"My clients get the best care out there because of this. They have a wraparound team, and recovery coaching is such a vital part of that."

Over her time at Eliot, Emilie also earned her master's degree in social work while working full-time as a recovery coach, with support from her team along the way. Her approach is simple: she meets clients where they are, and she stays with them through the milestones and the setbacks alike.

If you or someone you love is dealing with substance use, Eliot's recovery coaches are here.

For Su***de Prevention Awareness Month, we're sharing Felicia's story.

When she came to Eliot Community Human Services, she had spent years navigating misdiagnosis, invalidating care, and a su***de attempt. What changed everything wasn't one treatment. It was a team that asked "What happened to you?" instead of "What's wrong?"

That kind of response isn't incidental. It's part of Eliot's agency-wide Zero Su***de approach, which trains our clinicians to recognize and respond to su***de risk with precisely the transformative care Felicia experienced.

Today, she says: "For the first time in over two and a half decades, I'm not suicidal. I'm living. I'm thriving. I'm enjoying life."
