A huge thank you to Andy Masters for his keynote at the 2026 MCCA Student Success Summit in Muskegon, where he spoke to more than 430 community college leaders and practitioners!

Andy explored how exceptional service shapes the student experience, and how leadership and problem ownership in every role drive student engagement. His challenge to attendees: move from doing a job to building a bond with students—one interaction at a time.

We want to give a special shout out to Nkenge Bergan, Associate Vice President at Kalamazoo Valley Community College, for volunteering to join Andy on stage. Her wonderful performance showed what true service looks like when every interaction counts.

That’s a wrap on the 2026 MCCA Student Success Summit! 🎉

More than 430 community college leaders and practitioners came together in Muskegon for two days of learning, connection, and a shared focus on improving student success.

Special thanks to Pascale Charlot for challenging us to recognize the leadership role each of us play in improving completion and post-completion outcomes, and Andy Masters for exploring how exceptional service can shape the student experience.

And thank you to our state and national experts, Leadership Academy Fellows, and presenters who led 29 breakout sessions focused on practical strategies, emerging research, and ideas colleges can put into action.

The Summit may be over, but the work continues. Keep the momentum going: reconnect with colleagues, bring what you learned back to your campus, and identify the next step your team can take to improve the student experience.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in Muskegon. We’ll see you in Ypsilanti for the 2027 Student Success Summit!

Michigan’s community colleges are locally governed — and that matters.

Michigan’s Constitution provides for public community colleges to be supervised and controlled by locally elected boards.

That structure keeps our colleges accountable and responsive to the communities they serve. Local trustees hear directly from employers about workforce needs, understand the needs of their students and communities, and make decisions based on what works locally.

Proposal 1 would open Michigan’s Constitution for a general revision. MCCA opposes Proposal 1 because we believe opening the entire Constitution creates unnecessary uncertainty around the local governance structure that has served Michigan’s community colleges for decades.

Local colleges. Local leaders. Local accountability.

Vote "No" on Proposal 1.

Expanding dual enrollment has to work for every student, including rural and remote districts. That was central to the Task Force's charge. Greg Markkanen - State Representative pushed to make sure rural students were represented, down to the individual level:

"The Task Force took the time to assess the unique situations of these students, even going as far as to interview my intern from Gladstone, who successfully dual-enrolled, but not without challenges."

Dual enrollment is an important gateway to college because it allows eligible high school students to take college-level courses and earn postsecondary credits before graduating from high school. Yet too few Michigan students have access to these beneficial opportunities. A state task force recently released recommendations on how to remove barriers and improve access so that more students can take advantage of dual enrollment.
