After 34 years at WDET 101.9FM in Detroit, longtime News Director Jerome Vaughn has retired, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Michigan journalism and public radio.

Vaughn joined WDET in 1992 and worked his way through nearly every newsroom role before becoming News Director in 2007. Over the course of his career, he earned numerous journalism honors, was inducted into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame in 2018, and became a passionate mentor to countless aspiring journalists.

His love of radio began at age five with a yellow Panasonic radio — a passion that carried him through more than three decades of reporting, leadership and service to Detroit’s public radio community.

Vaughn's final broadcast was Monday, August 17.

🎉 Congratulations to Ed and Wanda Eichler, recipients of the 2026 MAPB Public Media Impact Award!

For nearly four decades, the Eichlers have championed education, music and public media, making a lasting impact on Michigan State University, WKAR - Public Media and communities across Michigan.

From supporting the Spartan Marching Band and MSU College of Music to advancing WKAR’s mission and expanding access to educational opportunities, their generosity and advocacy have made a meaningful difference.

We’re proud to recognize Ed and Wanda and their incredible contributions to Michigan’s public media community!
