It has been 5 months and 1 day since I began working at the Women’s Center of Greater Lansing as the Executive Director (but who’s counting?!) and I have a rare moment to reflect on what I have seen and felt over this time. I wanted to share these reflections in hopes that this enthusiasm catches on and grows.

From each individual served, to every intern and volunteer who lends a hand, I have witnessed acts of compassion and gratitude beyond my wildest dreams. We affectionately call this place the Center. Stories that stand out to me include a mom who comes to us after discovering her abusive partner has put a tracker on her car or the woman who whispers, “I need to get away from him.” While these stories are heartbreaking, behind them stands the Center’s personnel who hold their hand, offer a snack, a place to rest awhile, counseling, clothing, or personal needs. Their lives have been turned upside down, but soon transformed by people who started their day as total strangers to them.

Each of you likely knows someone close to you who has been in an abusive situation, witnessed a violent act, or has experienced some level of trauma as a child or adult. You have been that shoulder to cry on, that guiding light, the warm hug, and they may need something more. That is why our Center exists, for that something more.

I share this with you in the hopes to spark your interest or raise some level of compassion. The Center relies solely on grants, donations, and support from the community. In short, this work is not possible without the generosity of resources and support by those here in Greater Lansing, and we need your help. Your monetary donation provides essential resources to those in need, or assistance to keep the Center operating efficiently. Please consider supporting our important mission and work.
