Preparing for a disaster is critically important. For people with disabilities, who may have extra considerations in an emergency- like securing accessible transportation, keeping medications and medical equipment close at hand and operational, and more- being prepared is essential.

Join the Department of Health Care Policy & Financing (HCPF) for virtual feedback opportunities overviewing potential cuts to Long-Term Services and Supports (LTSS).

The upcoming Feedback Sessions, previously called Roundtables, are the second in a series of opportunities to give input on a new wave of LTSS cuts. In the upcoming sessions, HCPF will gather feedback on potential cost-cutting measures that are being considered for the broader package of Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) waivers and Community First Choice (CFC) services.

This month is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This observance brings attention to the needs and experiences of survivors of domestic violence to raise awareness, end domestic violence, and ensure survivors have the support and resources they need.

The US Government Accountability Office has found that people with disabilities experience domestic violence at five times the rate of people without disabilities, with people with intellectual disabilities particularly affected. This month is a time to work together to end this widespread epidemic and to support survivors, including survivors with disabilities.

The Department of Healthcare Policy & Financing (HCPF), which oversees Colorado’s Medicaid program, is holding several virtual meetings to help the public learn more about specific cuts to Long-Term Services and Supports (LTSS).

These virtual meetings are the first in a series of roundtables in which HCPF will share trends, explain challenges, discuss potential policy approaches, and ask for input from members, families, advocates, providers, case managers, and others. This first wave of roundtables is this week and will focus on improving sustainability for the Personal Care and Homemaker benefits.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), and this year’s theme is "Celebrating Value and Talent." People with disabilities bring skills, creativity, and perspective that strengthen every workplace. Yet, hiring barriers and bias still shut many out. Only about 38% of people with disabilities are employed, compared to 75% of those without disabilities. This month is a chance to raise awareness, challenge bias, and promote inclusive practices that benefit everyone.

Learn more about NDEAM on our blog and take the next step toward building a more inclusive workplace: https://bit.ly/4hw8iMR

Every day, direct support professionals (DSPs) help people with disabilities with tasks like getting dressed, taking medication, preparing meals, and so much more. Without that support, many people with disabilities wouldn’t be able to live in their communities, close to family and friends.

But the DSP workforce is facing a serious crisis. Each year, about 41% of DSPs leave their jobs, making it harder for people with disabilities to find and keep the consistent support they need. Oftentimes, DSPs are paid far too little for the critical work they do.

Make your voice heard! Congress is considering a bill that would pave the way for the government to collect important information about the DSP workforce so officials can better understand the challenges and start developing solutions. In 2025, more than 20 changes to Colorado’s Long-Term Services and Supports (LTSS) system were proposed by the state’s Department of Health Care Policy & Financing (HCPF) to offset federal Medicaid cuts and state budget challenges. These changes have had a big impact on our community. It’s crucial for people with disabilities to stay informed so they can prepare for changes to their services, make alternate plans if needed, and request exceptions to rules when it makes sense.

To help, we’ve compiled an up-to-date list of every change that’s being implemented as part of this effort and more information about each, including the timeline for each change, who is affected by each change, and how to request an exception for a small number of select changes.
