We've got another report from the stewardship team on their field visits this summer! Andrew says, "While it’s certainly been a joy to spend my summer exploring Colorado and its endless natural beauty, the greatest gift has not been the landscapes pictured above. It instead has been meeting landowners who are enthusiastic to share their stories, challenges, and deep connections with their conservation easement land. It’s been eye-opening to see how land management and conservation practices change based on region, weather, and individual goals. The Stewardship Team has been busy in the field! In July, Ellie and Jenn met up with Jon from Estes Valley Land Trust along with Ari and Matt from Esri, to discuss GIS workflows for conservation easement monitoring.

It was a great opportunity to collaborate with fellow conservation professionals, share ideas, and explore ways to strengthen stewardship practices. As an added bonus, one of the local residents decided to stop by and join the conversation.

New Landlines Episode!

In this episode, Landlines spoke to Larry Vickerman and Ben Lenth. Larry, now a Colorado Open Lands (COL) board member, was the chairman of the board of the San Isabel Land Protection Trust at the time of its 2021 merger with COL. Senior Project Manager Ben Lenth, who previously served as executive director of San Isabel, managed the merger from the COL side. Larry and Ben talked to Landlines about what made San Isabel so special, what made a merger desirable, and what conservation and stewardship are like in the region, post-merger.

Permanently Protected – Wildlife habitat in Steamboat Springs!

The City of Steamboat Springs recently purchased the 187-acre Slate Creek property and permanently protected 131 acres of it with Colorado Open Lands. Slate Creek is located in western Steamboat Springs, about three miles from downtown in an area with significant development pressure. The easement property contains one half mile of Slate Creek and rolling hills of sagebrush shrublands and Gambel oak shrublands. Habitat is provided for Columbian sharp-tailed grouse, Greater sandhill crane, northern leopard frog (all Colorado Species of Concern) and big game, including black bear, elk, moose, mountain lion, and mule deer.

From its protected setting along Slate Creek, the property features views of the Yampa Valley, Steamboat ski slopes, and the Flat Tops Wilderness Area. The property is visible from Bureau of Land Management lands, State Wildlife Areas, and conservation easements on Emerald Mountain and Routt National Forest lands to the east, including Steamboat Springs Ski Resort. Thirty additional conservation easements exist within five miles of the property.

The entirety of the property will be managed by the City for public recreation. In the coming years, the City will construct a loop trail along the perimeter of the easement property for walking and biking and will keep the interior in its natural state to minimize disturbance of the wildlife habitat.

Routt County Purchase of Development Rights (PDR) was a project partner on the conservation easement. Great Outdoors Colorado and the Land and Water Conservation Fund contributed to the land purchase as well.
