East Tennessee has lost one of its own.

Dolly Parton became a worldwide icon, but she never forgot where she came from. She gave back to this region again and again, not for attention, but because she believed in helping people, lifting up children, supporting families and taking care of her neighbors.

In so many ways, Dolly showed us all how to be better. Better neighbors. More generous. More compassionate. More willing to use what we have to help someone else.

She reminded us that success does not have to take you away from your roots. It can give you an even greater opportunity to strengthen them.

Her music will live on, but so will the example she set for Tennessee and for all of us.

Thank you, Dolly, for showing us what it means to love where you come from.
