A huge thank you to the team at Kuraray America, Inc. for joining us at our Sweetwater Preserve to help monitor our oyster reef restoration project! Together, the team monitored six reef bags and counted 140 live oysters! πŸ¦ͺ Totaling an impressive average of 23 oysters per bag!

Along the way, they helped identify an incredible variety of marine life calling the reef home, including stone crabs, pistol shrimp, barnacles, mussels, tunicates, polychaete worms, and naked gobies... way to go!

Thank you for bringing your enthusiasm, curiosity, and willingness to get your hands dirty in support of Galveston Bay. Every oyster counted helps us better understand and protect these important habitats for future generations. πŸŒŠπŸ¦€

Trash belongs in the bin, not the Bay. 🚯

It's , and we're highlighting one of the ways GBF is helping keep Galveston Bay clean! In case you missed it, two new litter booms were installed that capture floating trash before it can spread through local waterways!

Our Water Protection Manager, Natasha Zarnstorff, explains how this simple but effective tool helps protect wildlife, habitats, and the Bay we all love. Every piece of litter stopped is a step toward a cleaner future. πŸŒŠπŸ’™

Huge thank you to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Marine Debris Program, Gulf of America Alliance Gulf Star Program, and our partner Osprey Initiative for helping bring this project to life!

Looking back at our amazing wetland connection education events from the spring! β˜€οΈ

Each spring, Wetland Connections students visit our Sweetwater Preserve in Galveston to immerse themselves in our native saltmarsh wetland ecosystem. Students test water quality, identify aquatic organisms, observe coastal bird species, and compare a variety of wetland plants. MIddle school students also test wave energy while high school students learn how to use GIS in the field.

This is all part of a year-long project where students learn more about the importance of wetlands to Galveston Bay, increase their scientific observation and data collection skills, and become better connected to our local wetlands.

Big thanks to our program funders: ScottsMiracle-Gro Restore America's Estuaries Texas Commission on Environmental Quality! We couldn't provide this program for free to our schools without your help!

⭐️ Applications for next year will open in August!

πŸ—‘οΈ Big news for Houston and the waterways that lead to ! πŸ“£

Two new litter booms are officially in place at Greens Bayou and Kuhlman Gully, helping stop trash before it can make its way into Galveston Bay and the Gulf.

These passive trash traps are designed to capture bottles, packaging, and other debris while allowing water to continue flowing freely. By intercepting litter upstream, we're taking an important step toward cleaner waterways, healthier wildlife habitats, and a more resilient watershed.

This project has been years in the making and was made possible through support from NOAA Marine Debris, Gulf of America Alliance Gulf Star Program, and our partner Osprey Initiative .

We'll continue monitoring the booms and tracking the debris they collect to better understand how trash moves through Houston-area waterways and identify solutions to keep it out of our Bay.

Together, we're turning the tide on marine debrisβ€”one piece of trash at a time. πŸŒŠβ™»οΈ

🌊 Every drop tells a story.

This , remember that all bodies of water are connected. From the creeks and streams in our Houston communities to Galveston Bay and the ocean beyond. The choices we make on land can travel far downstream, making local conservation efforts more important than ever.

Protect local waters. Protect our Bay. Protect our ocean. πŸ’™
