Spotted bee balm, aka horsemint, is a fragrant, drought-tolerant Texas wildflower that blooms in beautiful masses in spring and summer. Prairies, plains, meadows, pastures, and savannas are its native habitat. This plant is the larval host for the Gray marvel (Anterastria teratophora) and Snout (Pyrausta generosa) moths, and it's of special value to native bees.
Monarda punctata has an unusual, upright form with multiple stems arising from short rhizomes. Tubular, pale yellow flowers are spotted with purple. The leaves smell like Greek oregano.
