Sails trimmed, boat settled, sun going down over Galveston.

For people who have spent a career on watch, that's the hard part. Not the work, it's the stopping. Idle is where everything you've been outrunning catches up, which is why a lot of our crew stay busy on purpose.

Out here the quiet is different. You're not idle, you're done for the moment, with the boat doing what it should and people around you who know where you've been.

Eyes on the horizon.

A whole day of a shakedown run, sped up to about two minutes.

Rigging checked, sails up and down, the new autopilot tested, the rebuilt winches put under load, and a crew working out who does what. The boring necessary part you do before you trust a boat offshore.

Big one coming up: Skeleton Crew Adventures is being featured at Beyond the Uniform on Wednesday, September 16, at the National Medal of Honor Museum in Arlington.

The evening starts with a screening of HELL OR HIGH SEAS, the documentary on Taylor's solo sail around Cape Horn, followed by a panel discussion with Taylor, Arlington Mayor Jim Ross, and Navy SEAL Jonathan Cleck. Hosted by The Cordish Companies, with a reception to follow at One Rangers Way.

It's free to attend, but seating is limited and RSVP is required by September 15.

In case you missed it:

Before the patched up cover made it onto Godspeed, this is what our mainsail cover looked like after the last hurricane got through with it. Taylor spent an afternoon in the shop turning this into something that will hopefully hold for a few more months. 🤞

Still looking to do this right with a brand new sail cover and hopefully also getting a new main sail. We are a high-mileage veteran and first responder crew looking for gear that can withstand severe offshore conditions, including possible 70-knot gusts.

The hardest part isn't the sailing.

It's the part where you decide to show up somewhere with people you don't know yet. Saying "it's free, no experience needed" doesn't touch that, so we won't pretend it does.

Here's what we'll tell you instead. Nobody's going to ask you to explain yourself.

There's weather, and a boat, and a job with your name on it. Four to six hours where the thing in your head has to take a back seat to something real that's happening right now.

That's adventure therapy.

Two people on the windward rail, feet over the side, the water going past a foot below them.

Nobody up there is somewhere else. There isn't room for it. When the boat is loaded up and your job is hold this line, watch that sail, the thing you carry gets set down — not resolved, not processed, just set down, because something in front of you needs your hands.

Anyone who has stood a watch already knows this. Focus is its own kind of rest.

Getting Encore ready for October.

Our crew practicing ahead of this year's Lakewood Yacht Club Harvest Moon Regatta, sails up, spinnaker flying, systems dialed in. We'll be back on the start line this fall.

Here's a fun fact about depth transducers. To clean one, you pull it out of the bottom of the boat. While the boat is in the water.

Ours had stopped telling the truth about how much water was under the keel. Turns out it had quietly become a barnacle housing development.

So Larry "won" and got the scraping. Taylor literally held back the Gulf of Mexico while providing leadership.

The instrument was never broken. It just had tenants, and now it doesn't.

All in a day's work.

Thought about coming out with us? Here's how it actually works.

It starts with the intake form. That's the whole barrier. You fill it out, we get back to you, and you come sail with us.

From there you get access to the calendar and pick your date to join us on the water. Day sails on Galveston Bay out of Kemah, four to six hours. Sails with your family, so the people at home get their own time on the water. And when you want more, overnight runs down the coast to Port Aransas, offshore passages that run a week or two, a path toward certifications and more.

None of it costs you anything. No experience needed. No gear to buy. You get yourself to the dock and somebody hands you a job and shows you how.
