When we have been hurt, resentment can feel justified. Part of us believes that holding onto the hurt protects us, honors what happened, or somehow keeps the other person accountable for the pain they caused. It can feel as though letting go would minimize the wound or excuse the wrongdoing.
The irony is that resentment often asks us to keep carrying the very pain we wish someone else understood. We replay the offense, revisit the disappointment, and continue drinking from a well that never satisfies. While we may hope the weight of our resentment somehow lands on the other person, it is often our own hearts, relationships, and emotional well-being that bear the greatest cost.
