KC Can Compost EMPOWERING PEOPLE, PRESERVING THE PLANET Two goods, one solution.

KC Can Compost is an innovative social and environmental enterprise conceived by Shelter KC, a charity that provides homeless men and women compassionate relief services and long-term recovery support. Together, we educate and employ once-homeless men and women, at a living wage, to collect organic waste from local area kitchens and divert it from the landfill for composting.

KC Can Compost is providing composting at all four Friday workshop locations across the Kansas City metro and the evening reception, helping make climate action part of every detail.

Kristan will also participate in a featured session exploring how KC Can Compost has grown to meet regional needs and how partnerships can help communities scale their own impact.

It's warm out there, KC!

Did you know pumpkins are about 90% water? That means warm air and sunshine can dry them out, leaving them shriveled and soft before Halloween even gets here. Talk about scary!

If you've already picked up a pumpkin at one of our local fall festivals, here are a few simple ways to help it last a little longer:

🌤️ Keep it cool and dry. Too much warmth and direct sunlight can speed up dehydration and decay.

💡 Choose LED lights. Skip real candles, which add heat and can dry out your pumpkin.

🎃Wait to carve. An uncarved pumpkin generally lasts longer, so save the carving for closer to Halloween!

And if your pumpkin doesn't quite make it to the 31st, or you're ready to retire it after Halloween, don't send it straight to the trash!

The Great Pumpkin Rescue is coming back this November, and we're getting ready to give those pumpkins another life through composting! We're working to finalize event plans, so circle your calendars for Sunday, November 1, and Saturday, November 7.

🍎 Happy World Teachers’ Day!

Teachers do more than teach lessons. They help students understand the world around them, ask thoughtful questions, and develop the knowledge and confidence to care for their communities.

We’re grateful for the teachers who make space for those conversations every day, including conversations about where our food goes and how we can take better care of the places we call home.

To celebrate, we put together a kid-friendly composting activity for Kansas City classrooms, covering what food scraps are, what can be composted, how composting works, and why it matters.

Every time food scraps get tossed into a standard trash bin, they end up buried deep in a local landfill under heavy layers of waste. Cut off from air and oxygen, that organic material rots anaerobically—releasing massive amounts of methane gas right here into our atmosphere.

How KC Can Compost Combats This:
When you compost with us, your food scraps are kept out of the landfill and supplied with plenty of oxygen as they break down. This simple shift stops harmful methane from forming, turning local food waste into rich compost that heals Kansas City's soil instead! 🚫💨🌱

Healthy dirt is the foundation of almost everything we eat, but bad weather and over-farming cause tons of nutrient-rich soil to wash or blow away every year.

How Composting Combats This: Compost acts like super-glue for soil. It binds dirt particles together so topsoil can resist heavy rain and wind. Returning your food scraps to the ground through compost physically rebuilds depleted soil and helps keep it where it belongs—growing our food! 🔄🥕
