Our work serves the most vulnerable in the Kansas City while reducing unnecessary waste of nutritious foods discarded into landfills Kanbe’s Markets mission is to provide access to fresh, healthy, and affordable produce for food deserts in Kansas City, Missouri. We bring good food to people who live in these communities by collaborating with already-existing corner stores — creating a community environment focused around delicious and nutritious food.

Proud to be among 250 attendees from nearly 40 states and D.C. who attended the 2026 Food is Medicine Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill.

We educated Congress on Food is Medicine and voiced support for Medically Tailored Meals, Medically Tailored Groceries, Produce Prescriptions, nutrition research, and
nutrition education.

The Advocacy Day clearly reflected the spectrum of multi-sector enthusiasm and support for Food is Medicine - participants includes patients and participants in FIM programs; physicians; registered dietitians; non-profit and for-profit providers of medically tailored meals, medically tailored groceries, and produce prescriptions; community organizations implementing FIM programs; food banks; healthcare systems; life insurers; researchers; farmers, and more, with experience in all facets of Food is Medicine.

Love is deeply woven into the heart of Kanbe’s Markets. Whether you know him through community work, creative projects, conversations that somehow turn your whole day around, or the way he shows up for people - you know the impact he carries. This Earth Day + Volunteer Appreciation Month, we’re celebrating the people and partners who make this work possible.

To date, we’ve redirected 594,380 pounds of fresh food—keeping it in motion to people, animal sanctuaries, farms, and compost, all contributing to a more sustainable food system at Kanbe’s.

This week, we opened a new expanded sorting space—made possible with support from the Mid-America Regional Council Solid Waste Management District, the Kirk Family Foundation, and partners like Blue Cross Blue Shield, who joined us in bringing it to life.

And most importantly, thank you to our volunteers. Every shift moves more food and expands what’s possible.

New space. Bigger groups. Evening + weekend shifts now open.

🌎 Earth Day Sip & Prep | April 22, 5:30–7:30 PM
Come hang, sip something good, and help us wash + chop berries for what’s ahead. Easy, social, and kind of meditative.

🍓 April Jam Class | April 29, 5:30–6:30 PM
Take it a step further and learn how to turn those berries into bold jams, play with unexpected flavors, and leave with a jar you made yourself and the skill to keep jammin!

Prep it. Make it. Or meet us somewhere in the middle. 🍓✨

Today we cut the ribbon on our 25th store partner in Wyandotte County, Kansas! Thank you to Metro Auto for hosting us being part of what we’re building together.

25 stores in KANSAS! Thousands of neighbors with consistent access to fresh food. This is what happens when a community invests in its own infrastructure, store by store, block by block.

This milestone is powered by partners who believed in the vision: Kansas Health Foundation, Hall Family Foundation, Wyandotte Health Foundation, Union Pacific Charities, United Way, Village Church, and the Healthy Food Financing Initiative with research support from Sunflower Foundation, JUNTOS, and the University of Kansas Health System.

Grateful to stand alongside our wonderful staff, community, and supporters including Representative Sharice Davids and Mayor Christal Watson as we keep building forward together.

Join us on April 24th with local artist Tara of Lost & Found Design for a hands-on strawberry stained glass workshop. Choose your chain, add beads and crystals, and paint your own seed dots 🍓 every piece comes out a little different (in the best way).
