CAC BLACK FACTS #3: Democratizing Arts Access

For four decades, the Community Artists’ Collective has worked to make meaningful arts experiences available beyond the walls of traditional institutions.

Through more than 1,200 free community workshops and decentralized arts initiatives, The Collective has pushed back against systemic barriers and brought high-quality arts education directly into communities—because access to creativity should never be determined by a person’s ZIP code.

This is how access expands.
This is how creativity flourishes.
This is The Collective.

Follow along as we continue the Road to 40 and celebrate the history, people, and impact of the Community Artists’ Collective.

Join Women of Color in the Arts (WOCA) as they celebrate the power of rest and the current cohort of grantees of The Sabbatical Fund - a WOCA initiative that provides paid rest to our community so that they can divest from the system of capitalism and prioritize themselves over productivity.

Prioritize yourself and come hear about the experiences of these women and the importance of intentional rest. Tap into local resources for your well-being and revel in the power of community care.

Hosted in conjunction with Community Artists' Collective and their exhibition, The Road to 40: A Retrospective, dedicated to four decades of creativity, resilience and community.

Introducing ✨️CAC BLACK FACTS✨️ on The Road to 40

As the Community Artists’ Collective approaches 40 years of creativity, culture, education, and community, we’re honoring the journey by sharing 12 facts and figures that reflect the true history, ethos, and impact of The Collective.

Each CAC Black Fact will highlight a meaningful part of our legacy - and the people, purpose, and perseverance that have sustained this vital institution for four decades.

BLACK FACT #1: Centering and Lifting African American Women

At its very core, the Community Artists’ Collective was founded on the radical ethos of centering and elevating African American women.

For 40 years, The Collective has served as a premier sanctuary and proving ground, intentionally providing more than 400 women of color with the dedicated space, support, and opportunity to safely incubate, share, and fiercely exhibit their work—especially when the doors of mainstream institutions remained closed.

This is our history. This is our impact. This is The Collective.

Follow along as we continue the Road to 40 and celebrate the stories that have shaped our legacy.
