A State of Teal: Thank You, Alabama!
We are overwhelmed by the support shown during September’s GYN Cancer Awareness Month through A State of Teal, the Head Over Teal Race, and proclamations across our state!
Proclamations are about more than recognizing a month on the calendar. They create opportunities for survivors to share their stories, raise awareness, honor those we have lost, and remind others they are not alone.
One especially meaningful moment was seeing GYN cancer survivor Carissa Beckham and her parents welcomed into Mayor Maddox’s office in Tuscaloosa. After hearing Carissa’s story, he told her she was “probably the bravest person he’s ever met.” It was an incredibly special moment for Carissa and her parents and a beautiful reminder of why this work matters.
Every time a survivor shares her story, she gives a voice to others who may be walking a similar journey. These stories build understanding, raise awareness, and remind survivors that they are not alone.
