Our remarkable landscape shapes who we are and steers us towards who we can become. Alabama’s rich scenic beauty, exceptional biodiversity, and hard-earned cultural history flows from the Appalachian Mountains to the Gulf Coast. Yet, Alabama does not capture its potential outdoor recreation economy. The Alabama Trails Foundation resolves to change that through partnerships, open dialog, and collab

oration to develop biologically, economically, and socially sustainable trails for Alabama. Sustainably managed trails can be part of a strategy to leverage the economic success and social relevance of nearby communities. They provide a means to connect people to natural resources allowing an enriched dialog on rural and wildland values. Urban trails provide a myriad of health and social benefits to intercity and suburban environments. Trails are an excellent entrée for inviting visitors to enjoy, learn, and appreciate what makes Alabama special.

National Trails Day was created in 1993 by the American Hiking Society to celebrate the importance of trails in our lives. It is an opportunity to get outside, connect with other trail users, and help make the trails you love even better.

With events across Alabama, from a bio-blitz at the Rockpile Reservation in Muscle Shoals to a guided walk at Gulf State Park, there’s something for everyone.

Join us as we celebrate giving back to the trails community in Alabama. and celebrate our love for trails. If you can’t be part of an official event, be sure to get outside and enjoy all that Alabama has to offer. We can all do our part to leave the trails better than we found them. From picking up litter to rigorous trail building, we can make a lasting impact!

ATF President Paul DeMarco recently visited Alabama State Parks Division's Monte Sano State Park. The park spans 2,140 acres, offering spectacular vistas from its summit, especially during the fall when the leaves put on a vibrant display of color. In the spring, native azaleas bloom along the 20 miles of hiking trails and 14 miles of biking trails.
