Our Community Place A non-profit founded in 2008 promoting personal growth and community well-being. Our Community Place (OCP) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Johnson and N.

We strive to build a safe, loving community of restoration and hope for all,
especially those facing homelessness and other adverse experiences. In 1992, Ron Copeland started closing the Little Grill Restaurant every Monday in order to host a cooperative community meal called The Free Food For All Soup Kitchen. Anyone in the world was welcome and meals were served family-style. During the 90’s, f

olks involved in the Soup Kitchen got together and started a non-profit organization called Our Community Place (OCP) in order to buy a nearby property, move out of the Little Grill, and create a community center that would be welcoming to all. In 2001, OCP purchased the old Salvation Army building on the corner of E. Main St. Renovation lasted seven and a half years as funds and/or volunteer labor allowed. Countless individuals, church and civic groups, and contractors donated time, materials, and money. OCP opened in August of 2008 and immediately began welcoming anyone in the world. Today, OCP is working to cultivate a community of restoration and hope, still welcoming all and believing in the inherent dignity and value of every person.

According to the 2025 Well-Being and Basic Needs Survey, individuals and families face persistently higher grocery prices, leading them to turn to credit and personal savings to fill budget gaps. Credit and savings can be a temporary lifeline, but overreliance on these resources may lead to financial and food instability.

That is why places like Our Community Place and local food banks are critical to helping people stabilize when every monthly expense is rising. Resources and services provided by OCP ease the decision-making burden for individuals/families about what they can afford and what they can't.
