The Arc of Harrisonburg and Rockingham
Supporting those with intellectual and developmental disabilities since 1962 The Arc should be considered as a title or a phrase.

We believe that all people with intellectual or developmental disabilities have a right to make their own choices about how to live their lives. In order to make informed choices, they must have the full experience of all their communities have to offer. They must have the opportunity to become valued members of their communities, recognized for their unique gifts and talents, not just for their challenges. We believe that everyone with an intellectual or developmental disability can be served in the community with the necessary supports. By starting with the belief that people can do more, give more, and be more than we ever imagined if we let go of our own assumptions about them, we strive to be one of those resources. We dedicate ourselves to helping them find the other resources they need and to assist them in breaking down the barriers that hold them back from creating lives of their own choosing. We help people with intellectual and developmental disabilities live A Life Like Yours (ALLY). Join us!

For every day of October, we'll be sharing new drawings created by our talented Arc artists, inspired by the daily Inktober prompts!

Here's our first week of drawings! Thank you to the volunteers from JMU's Alpha Phi Omega for joining us and helping our artists bring their ideas to life!

Lanterns and Lace is almost here!

The Arc of HR is having their all abilities prom Wednesday October 14th, 11am-2pm in the Lucy Simms Center auditorium. Grab your best outfit and be ready to dance! Hors d'oeuvres will be provided.

This event is separate from the Board Meeting, which will happen during the Holiday party on December 15th at Silver Lake Farm. Stay tuned for more information.

Recently at The Arc of HR, we had an ARCessible Art! Our participants made ornaments using acorns and toothpicks a few weeks ago. Last week, the participants spray-painted their ornaments and also painted pine cones outside. This was such a fun way for our participants to express themselves and get some time outside. We love all our volunteer help with our art program and seeing our participants amazing artwork!

Dear Community Members,

Hello, Harrisonburg and Rockingham County!

I'm thrilled to introduce myself as the new Executive Director of The Arc of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County!

My name is Robin Baker, and I've spent my career walking alongside people with developmental disabilities and their families, most recently as Executive Director of The Arc of Central Virginia. I believe every person deserves the chance to live a full, connected life in the community they call home, and I can't wait to help carry that mission forward here.

The Arc of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County has a legacy of heart, advocacy, and real, everyday impact. That legacy was built by the people we serve, their families, our dedicated staff, our volunteers, and supporters like you. I'm honored to join this team, and I'm excited about what we'll build together in the time ahead.

Over the coming weeks, I'll be out in the community getting to know as many of you as I can. If you see me, please say hello! And if you have a story, an idea, or a hope for The Arc's future, my door is always open.

Here's to new beginnings and to a community where everyone belongs!

Last Friday was a chance to celebrate the final year of our MLK Day of Service Grant and look back at everything this grant has helped us do in our community!

Over the years since 2021, this grant has helped The Arc create meaningful volunteer opportunities, support local food security efforts, and build lasting relationships with organizations and neighbors throughout Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.

Nourishment for Neighbors was a perfect way to close this chapter. This year alone, we distributed 66 boxes of nonperishable food and 150 shares of fresh produce, reaching more than 200 households.

Most importantly, we celebrated everyone who has been part of this journey: our participants, staff, volunteers, community partners, and supporters.

The grant may be ending, but the work is not. We are hoping to carry these relationships, lessons, and opportunities forward as we continue finding ways for people of all abilities to serve and strengthen their community through food security.
