The Arc of Harrisonburg and Rockingham

The Arc of Harrisonburg and Rockingham
Supporting those with intellectual and developmental disabilities since 1962 The Arc should be considered as a title or a phrase.

We believe that all people with intellectual or developmental disabilities have a right to make their own choices about how to live their lives. In order to make informed choices, they must have the full experience of all their communities have to offer. They must have the opportunity to become valued members of their communities, recognized for their unique gifts and talents, not just for their c

hallenges. We believe that everyone with an intellectual or developmental disability can be served in the community with the necessary supports. By starting with the belief that people can do more, give more, and be more than we ever imagined if we let go of our own assumptions about them, we strive to be one of those resources. We dedicate ourselves to helping them find the other resources they need and to assist them in breaking down the barriers that hold them back from creating lives of their own choosing. We help people with intellectual and developmental disabilities live A Life Like Yours (ALLY). Join us!

**The Arc is not an acronym; always refer to us as The Arc, not The ARC and never ARC.

📣 Self Advocacy Advisor Training!

The Arc of Virginia and ALLY Alliance are offering a Self Advocacy Advisor Training for anyone, with or without disabilities, who wants to help strengthen leadership, coaching, and communication skills across Virginia’s self-advocacy movement.

This training is a great opportunity to learn how to support self-advocates, build stronger advisory skills, and become part of a growing statewide community of practice.

We are so excited to celebrate Rebecca O’Roark, one of the artists in The Arc’s ARCessible Art Program, whose piece Death’s Bouquet will be featured in The Art of Teaching group art show at Sage Bird!

Join us for First Fridays of the Valley on Friday, June 5 from 5–8 PM to see Rebecca’s artwork in person. Death’s Bouquet will also remain on display throughout the month of June.

This is a special moment for Rebecca and for ARCessible Art. Through this program, artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities are supported as they create, exhibit, and share their work with the broader community. Rebecca’s participation in this show is an exciting step in helping artists of all abilities be recognized as creative voices in the local arts scene.

We are also proud to share that Nathanael Eby, Coordinator of ARCessible Art, has been invited to serve as a judge for the show in his capacity as an art teacher and program coordinator. This opportunity reflects the growing connection between ARCessible Art, local artists, and the creative community here in Harrisonburg.

Come out to Sage Bird, support Rebecca, enjoy local art, and celebrate the power of creativity, teaching, and inclusion!

Today in ARCessible Art, we explored color gradients and silhouettes. Everyone brought their own creativity to the canvas! 🎨

We were also excited to be joined by Jamie, a new volunteer who will be helping with ARCessible Art on an ongoing basis. We are so grateful for volunteers who make the ARCessible Art Program even more meaningful.

Interested in joining us for fun arts and crafts as a volunteer? Email ARCessible Art Coordinator Nathanael Eby at [email protected].

June Food Drive Next Week! 🥫

The Arc of Harrisonburg and Rockingham is getting ready for our June Food Drive, and we need your help!

For the past two years, our community has helped us collect food for the Backpack Program in Harrisonburg, supporting local families facing food insecurity. This year, we’re asking our neighbors to step up again and give what they can.

One of the easiest ways to help is during a regular Walmart shopping trip. While you’re picking up groceries, consider grabbing a few extra non-perishable items from our recommended shopping list. Participants, staff, and volunteers from The Arc will be at Walmart to personally accept donations, hand out flyers, and thank you for supporting families in Harrisonburg and Rockingham.

Come see us at Walmart!

📍 **Walmart Food Drop-Off**
171 Burgess Rd, Harrisonburg
Monday, June 8 – Wednesday, June 10
10 AM – 6 PM

Can’t make it to Walmart? You can also drop off food directly at our office:

📍 **Lucy F. Simms Center Food Drop-Off**
620 Simms Ave, Harrisonburg
Monday, June 8 – Friday, June 12
8 AM – 6 PM

Any donation, big or small, makes a difference. Buy one extra item, fill a bag, or share this post to help spread the word. This is a simple way to care for our neighbors and support families right here in our community.

We need all the help we can get. Give if you can. đź’™

✨ Adventures with The Arc: Meet Melissa Hartley!

Melissa loves the opportunities The Arc gives her to get out into the community, spend time with friends, and enjoy activities together. Whether she’s relaxing and talking with friends and family, volunteering for Meals on Wheels with Valley Program for Aging Services, or joining yoga class at the Lucy Simms Center, Melissa enjoys staying connected with the people around her.

At home, Melissa loves watching TV, especially the show Charmed, and spending time with her bulldog, Darla May. She also likes going out to eat, with Applebee's and Wood Grill Buffet being two of her favorite spots. Melissa especially appreciates that Wood Grill Buffet helps provide food for several Arc events throughout the year.

Another fact about Melissa is that she is deeply devoted to her Christian faith and often likens it to being married. The Arc values creating a supportive environment where participants can openly express the beliefs and passions that are meaningful to them.

Through all of her activities and connections, she brings kindness, warmth, and appreciation for the community around her.

This month, a group of participants from The Arc had the chance to take part in a special two-part workshop with Valley Creative Reuse!

Valley Creative Reuse generously provided materials for participants to create their own craft flowers, turning reused and repurposed supplies into something bright, beautiful, and full of personality.🌸

We are SO thankful for community partners like Valley Creative Reuse, who make creativity more accessible while also showing how materials can be given a second life through art. It was a wonderful opportunity for participants to explore, create, and spend time together in a welcoming creative space.

We had a great time and hope this is just the beginning of many more community collaborations to come!
