Debt buyers are companies that purchase old debts (usually for pennies on the dollar) and then sue people to collect. Too often, these cases involve incomplete records, confusing paperwork, or debts that may already be paid, expired, or inaccurate. For families already struggling to make ends meet, a judgment can mean damaged credit, frozen bank accounts, or wages at risk.

That’s why legal representation matters. Since May of 2024, Blue Ridge Legal Services has won 100% of the debt buyer cases we’ve handled — helping ensure our neighbors are treated fairly and that no one loses their rights simply because they can’t afford an attorney.

Before you sign anything — pause and read the fine print.

We see it again and again: people unknowingly agreeing to terms they didn’t fully understand, only to face serious consequences later. Contracts can affect your housing, finances, employment, and more.

Never sign a document unless you have read it, understand it, and know what it requires of you — and what it promises in return. If something seems confusing, ask questions before you sign.

A few extra minutes today can prevent major problems tomorrow.

It’s graduation season, and we’re celebrating all the graduates beginning their next chapter — especially the hundreds of students graduating from Virginia law schools this year. 🎓⚖️

As these graduates begin their careers, the need for legal aid has never been greater.

In Virginia, there is only 1 legal aid attorney for every 7,237 low-income residents who qualify for assistance.

Access to justice shouldn’t depend on someone’s income. We’re grateful for every attorney who chooses to use their skills to serve their community and help close the justice gap.

⏳ Power Hour starts NOW! ⏳

From 12–1 PM, your gift to Blue Ridge Legal Services could help us win a $1,000 bonus—the approximate cost of handling one full case for someone in need.

Here’s what that impact looks like:

"Marie", a young mother of two small children, reached out to BRLS for help with a collections issue. Marie was already struggling financially, which only became worse when her wages started being garnished at her job as a CNA. Marie had never received any notice of the lawsuit prior to the garnishment, which was due to a debt she jointly owed with her ex-husband. A BRLS attorney obtained a copy of the underlying Warrant in Debt and was able to prove to the creditor’s attorney that proper notice of the lawsuit had not been given to our client. The BRLS attorney warned that if the creditor did not return the previously garnished funds from Marie’s paychecks, she would file a “Motion to Set Aside” to overturn the court’s judgment on the lawsuit. In response, the creditor agreed to return all garnished funds, which totaled $1,871 from the current garnishment and $2,511 from the prior garnishment and to set aside the judgment against Marie and her ex-husband. BRLS was able to recover thousands of dollars for Marie, which helped alleviate some of her financial burden.
