Blue Ridge Legal Services is the legal aid society that provides free civil legal assistance to low-income families in the greater Shenandoah and Roanoke valleys. We cannot provide legal advice unless you have been found eligible for our services through our normal intake system. Until you are formally accepted as a client after going through our intake system, BRLS does not intend to create an attorney-client relationship by receiving e-mail communications, and you should not provide us with any privileged or confidential information if you do e-mail or message us prior to becoming a client.

What does civil justice have to do with everyday life?

More than you might think.

An eviction notice. A custody dispute. Unpaid wages. Unsafe housing. These are everyday problems that can have a lasting impact on people and families.

A civil justice system that works helps people solve these problems fairly—and when it works, it strengthens families, communities, and our economy.

But too many people struggle to get the legal help they need.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing more about civil justice: why it matters, the challenges people face, the solutions that are working, and the role we all can play in building a system that works better for everyone.

Looking for a meaningful way to make a difference in our community?

Our friends at People Helping People (PHP) in Harrisonburg are looking for a Part-Time Director to lead their local nonprofit and help provide essential utility assistance to individuals and families facing hardship.

The Director will help:
• Lead daily operations and coordinate volunteers
• Oversee finances, donations, grants, and administrative work
• Manage utility-assistance programs
• Build relationships with donors, churches, and community partners
• Represent PHP and share its mission in the community
• Work with the Board of Directors to strengthen programs and partnerships
• Ensure clients are treated with dignity, compassion, and respect

The ideal candidate is organized, dependable, compassionate, and a strong communicator. Nonprofit, volunteer, financial, grant, or community-service experience is helpful but not required.

This year, the Virginia Law Foundation awarded $753,000 to 34 Virginia nonprofits working to advance access to justice, the Rule of Law, and law-related education. On August 20, BRLS Executive Director John Whitfield joined fellow Virginia nonprofits at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture to celebrate the Foundation’s 2026 grants.

Blue Ridge Legal Services is grateful to be among the organizations supported by the Foundation and appreciates its investment in helping us provide free civil legal services to our neighbors.

The Legal Services Corporation (LSC) has released “By the Numbers,” a new report highlighting the civil legal challenges facing low-income Americans and the impact of LSC-funded legal services organizations.

Here are some key findings:
- Consumer and finance cases increased 13.7% from 2024.
- Domestic violence cases increased 5.4%.
- LSC grantees served more than 1.8 million clients nationwide.

As an LSC grantee, Blue Ridge Legal Services is proud to be part of this nationwide effort to help people protect their homes, finances, safety, and futures. Behind every number is a person or family facing a serious legal challenge.

We're starting a new series highlighting the people in our communities who turn to Blue Ridge Legal Services when they face a legal problem—and how civil legal aid can make a difference.

We're starting with our seniors.

Seniors deserve security. Legal problems can put that security at risk, whether it's an issue with benefits, housing, or abuse. Civil legal services can help seniors secure the benefits they've earned, prevent eviction, and protect themselves from elder abuse.

These aren't just legal issues. They can affect someone's home, financial security, and ability to live with dignity.

Cautionary tale: Being someone’s Power of Attorney does not mean you’re responsible for their debts.

If a document asks you to sign as a “Guarantor,” stop and read carefully. A Power of Attorney and a guarantor are two very different things—and signing as a guarantor could mean taking on financial responsibility yourself.

Don’t assume a signature is “just part of being a Power of Attorney.” If you’re unsure what you’re being asked to sign, seek legal advice first.
