Early this month, Friends of the North River joined us in hosting a paddle down the North River! 🛶

What was forecasted to be a chilly day, turned into a sunny, warm afternoon. ☀

While paddling down the river, our crew found lots of old trash, including lots of old tires. A huge shoutout is due to all the participants that helped get all the tires out of the water!

It made us start thinking about tire pollution and how it effects our natural world.

Read our blog post on tire pollution in the North River, at the link below.

Conservation Species Highlight!

The Bobolink is a songbird that lives throughout Virginia Grasslands.🌾

These incredible songbirds don't nest in trees; they lay their eggs right in the ground of local hayfields and pastures. Unfortunately, this makes them highly vulnerable to early spring mowing, contributing to a major population decline over the last 50 years.

Males sport a dapper tuxedo-look with black and white plumage and a distinct yellow patch on their heads, while females are more subtly camouflaged in brown.

The loss of Bobolinks, and other grassland birds, poses a serious threat to the biodiversity in the Valley and Ridge and Piedmont regions.

The Virginia Grassland Bird Initiative is working on innovative ways to reverse the decline of grassland birds, like the bobolink, across the Commonwealth of Virginia.🐦

Note: All handling of wild birds for our studies are conducted by trained professionals under a federally authorized banding permit.

A break in the rain this weekend brought some beautiful mountain views, and a reminder of a critical role our natural landscapes play. 🌧️

Rain feels commonplace, but too much, too fast transforms it from a normal necessity into a serious threat.

Virginia’s 2025 climate assessment highlighted our new reality. While the number of rainy days hasn't increased, the intensity of the rainfall has. ☂️

When rain falls too fast, it can't absorb into the ground, creating dangerous surface runoff and flooding.

This is where our undeveloped forests and agricultural lands become our best defense, acting as natural infrastructure to slow the water down and protect not only our communities, but our natural ecosystems as well.

Last weekend we got out with the Shenandoah Permaculture Institute to learn about Bradford Pear Trees! 🪾

Bradford Pears are an invasive species, but proper grafting and care can turn them into a more productive plant.

A big thank you to the team at the for teaching us about these trees! 🌳

Last week, our team headed to Newport News for the Virginia Land Conservation and Greenways Conference! 🌳

It was an inspiring few days of learning alongside fellow conservation leaders from across the Commonwealth.

Our fellows had the incredible opportunity to talk with Governor Spanberger to discuss their career goals and the future of conservation in Virginia.

We’re also proud of our own Amanda Gookin, who shared her expertise on a panel about building and managing successful internship and fellowship programs.

And of course, we found some time to go bird watching along the beach! 🐦

We are happy to announce that a property in Natural Bridge, Rockbridge County is now protected under a conservation easement!

This easement protects 273-acres of working farmland and forestland with significant natural resources that contribute to the growing network of conserved lands in our area.

The property lies within the Buffalo Creek–Purgatory Mountain Wildlife Corridor, underscoring its role in strengthening regional habitat connectivity between the Allegheny and Blue Ridge Mountains.

Conservation Species Highlight! 🦅

The Loggerhead Shrike is a predatory songbird that is currently listed as a state endangered species in Virginia.

These birds have black mask-like markings on their faces and black tails, with white tail feathers mostly visible during flight. They thrive in semi-open country environments, with lots of tall grasses and scattered perches to help them hunt. 🌾

Loggerhead Shrikes are an indicator species whose presence or absence in a habitat signals the condition of that ecosystem.

Since the 1970s these birds have faced a population decline of over 70% throughout the Northeastern United States. Since Loggerhead Shrikes are not highly mobile and have specific habitat requirements, their population decline is a direct representation of the loss of the healthy grasslands and farmlands they would usually live in.

If you spot a Loggerhead Shrike you can help conservation efforts by documenting your finding at https://ebird.org/home.
