This morning, more than 20 birders joined us for a peaceful bird walk through Leatha Jean Stassen State Wildlife Area, a hidden gem of walking trails and marshy habitat in Grand Junction. We saw or heard a total of 21 bird species, including the Virginia Rail, Marsh Wren, and Cedar Waxwing. Thank you for joining us!

✨ Our next guided bird walk will be Saturday, November 21 at 8am at Highline Lake State Park. And our next program, Bird Calls and Sounds, will be this Monday, October 19 at 6:30pm at the new Community Recreation Center! ✨

Thanks to all who came out to watch and learn at our bird banding station in collaboration with Bird Conservancy of Rockies and Colorado Parks and Wildlife!

Bird banding is an incredible tool to collect and track data related to our bird populations, especially now at peak fall migration. The data collected at this station will inform conservation efforts for years to come!

With your support, we are grateful for the opportunity to educate the public (and more than 850 field-tripping 4th graders!) about bird banding and conservation.

Our Science Sprouts had a close look at a Spotted Towhee at Grand Valley Audubon's bird banding station at Connected Lakes this week. Public is invited to the bird banding Saturday, Sept. 26 from 8-11AM. It's migration season, and turning bright lights off at night helps migrating birds navigate. You can check out how many birds are flying over Mesa County at birdcast.org.

It’s bird banding time in Grand Junction! 🐦‍⬛ Right now, we are collecting data and banding birds with help from our friends at Bird Conservancy of the Rockies and Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Over the next couple weeks, more than 850 4th grade students from Mesa County Valley School District 51 will visit the banding station to learn about bird conservation, and we estimate more than 200 birds will be banded!

🐸 35 bullfrogs, a whole lot of muddy boots, and a newly trained crew of conservation volunteers!

A huge thank you to the Colorado Parks and Wildlife experts who joined us last week to train CCA volunteers in the capture and collection of invasive bullfrogs. Your expertise—and willingness to share it with our volunteer community—helps make this work possible!

And another big thank you to our friends at Grand Valley Audubon for welcoming us to the preserve and giving us the perfect training ground to put our new skills to work. 🌿

Together, our volunteers captured and collected 35 invasive bullfrogs during the training! More importantly, we now have a well-trained pool of volunteers ready to help CCA continue this important work in McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area at future events.

Invasive species management is hands-on work, and it takes a community to make a difference. We’re grateful for the partners, experts, and volunteers who are willing to get their hands dirty to protect these special places. 💚
