Volunteers recently spent the day in Glade Park removing old fencing and replacing it with wildlife-friendly fence designed to better support animal movement across the landscape.

Old fencing can create barriers for wildlife and increase the risk of injury, especially for deer and elk trying to cross. The new fence features a smooth top wire that is safer for animals and sections that can be laid down in the winter to allow for easier seasonal migration.

This work supports working lands while also helping wildlife move more freely through important habitat corridors. Thank you to everyone who helped make this project possible! 🌿🦌

Join Colorado West Land Trust in the field on two different conserved properties along the North Fork of the Gunnison River. Experience restoration up-close and learn about how Low-Tech, Process Based-Restoration (LTBPR) can enhance and expand wetlands to improve wildlife habitat, reduce flood and wildfire risk, and improve water quality.

Then, join us at Paradise Theatre the following evening for a film screening of “Thinking Like Water” a five-part series documenting the innovative restoration practices of Bill Zeedyk. Join us at the Paradise Theatre in Paonia at 5:30pm for happy hour. The screening starts at 6pm and will be followed by a panel of local experts and the filmmaker.

Field Trip 11am-3pm on June 25th
Film Screening 5:30-8pm on June 26th

Volunteers worked on a conserved property in Glade Park to help improve wildlife movement across the landscape by removing old fencing and installing a wildlife-friendly fence.

The new fence features a smooth top wire to help reduce injuries and allow animals to cross more safely, while sections can also be laid down in the winter to support seasonal migration. These efforts help create a healthier, more connected habitat for the wildlife that call this landscape home.

We’re proud to share that we’ve renewed our national accreditation through the Land Trust Alliance!

As one of the first land trusts accredited back in 2009, this renewal reflects our continued commitment to doing this work the right way. Accreditation is a mark of excellence held by just over 400 of the nearly 1,700 land trusts across the country, and it represents the highest standards in land conservation.

Behind the scenes, this means a rigorous review process, demonstrating strong leadership, fiscal accountability, sound conservation practices, and a lasting commitment to stewarding the lands we help protect.

For our community, it means you can trust that the landscapes you care about are in good hands, now and for the future.

This month, we celebrated the protection of a remarkable property along the Dolores River in Paradox Valley. The afternoon was filled with beautiful views, conversations about native plants and the landscape’s ecological value, and a special performance from bluegrass singer Emily Scott Robinson.

We’re incredibly grateful for the opportunity to protect landscapes that support wildlife, preserve the character of the West, and connect people to the land.

At our April board meeting, we said goodbye to two incredible leaders who have left a lasting mark on our organization.

After nine years of dedicated service, Mark Hermundstad has termed off the board. Throughout his time, Mark brought invaluable water expertise and a steady commitment to our mission.

We also honored Chuck McDaniel as he concluded his service on the board. Chuck previously served two terms and returned to lend his knowledge and leadership once again. In recognition of his lasting contributions, we were proud to name him an Emeritus Board Member.

We’re deeply grateful to both Mark and Chuck for their years of service, insight, and passion for conservation. Their impact will be felt for years to come.

What does land conservation have to do with water? More than you might think.

We recently conserved Buck Creek Ranch, a nearly 500-acre working ranch in Gunnison County, building on the work of our regional Water Protection Plan.

With 182 irrigated acres supported by senior water rights, this ranch helps keep water in agriculture while supporting wetlands, wildlife habitat, and the long-term resilience of our landscapes and communities.

As drought, development pressure, and water scarcity continue to impact the West, conserving working lands like Buck Creek Ranch helps ensure water stays on the land, agriculture remains viable, and ecosystems continue to thrive for generations to come.

This spring, we spent a morning birding and exploring a conserved property in Delta County, and it did not disappoint.

Guests joined landowners John Welfelt and Steve Lewis for a Birding and Blossoms tour, spotting birds across wetlands, ponds, and along the Uncompahgre River.

John and Steve saved this piece of property from becoming a golf course and the restore 20 spring-fed ponds, native vegetation, and habitat stretching across both sides of the river. Thanks to everyone who joined us in the field!
