You are Knott Alone-Hold Fast and we will fight the demons together! Helping Veterans one sunrise and crab pot at a time. Climb Aboard!

22 Veterans per day…
Virginia has one of the highest concentrations of Veterans.
30% of Veterans have mental health conditions requiring treatment
40% struggle with substance abuse
Less than 50% actually receive treatment.
22 Veterans per day commit su***de*

Mission: Help Fight the Demons
Support veterans battling effects from military service while helping prevent su***de through hands-on commercial fishing (Watermen) activities combined with integrative therapy. How: Sanctuary
In partnership with the Knott Normal Crab Company, we will establish a sanctuary that will provide an opportunity for veterans to open up and connect while harvesting seafood, forming bonds, and seeking assistance. With love and support from the community, we will provide the opportunity to find peace through the hard work and solitude inherent when working on the water. We will also provide further opportunities to connect with other veterans and a wide range of integrative treatment options to help combat the effects of service. Our goal is to be there for anyone struggling and offer a menu of options to help with issues such as; relationship problems, depression, addiction/dependency, suicidal thoughts while also providing a pathway for training and job opportunities along with ensuring hard-earned Veteran’s Affairs benefits are received. Why will working on the water help? The serenity provided while crabbing or oystering provides a unique environment that allows for interpersonal connection through focused work and the solitude of being with nature—it is up to the veteran whether to communicate or just get lost in the work. The hope is that this opportunity will allow for a true connection between Veterans to facilitate an open space where they can talk about the demons they are fighting. This personal connection will enable a willingness to seek assistance…and the support and accountability to stay the course to help recover.

Sometimes you need a good reminder of why you put your boots on every morning…This past week Nichole and I took a week and went camping with little to no cell signal—Boy was that needed! It’s pretty remarkable how easy it is to let needed tasks and frustration can cause some burn out and detract from the things that truly matter in this world. So, when I got back to the land of internet I found a great email from a friend with some footage when they did some filming for Surf and Turf a few years ago (link in comments). It is soooo hard to watch a video of yourself but I also think things like this pop up for a reason and maybe that is just a way to remind you to keep on keeping on. This is also a good reminder that Su***de Prevention Month was Sept but where and who are you the other 11 months?Check on your peeps, be Kind, and give Grace like their life depends on it…because it might! Even to the person that just cut you off in traffic!!

I had the privilege and honor of working around some amazing leaders and extraordinary people during my time in the military…I can truly say that General Miller was at the top of that list and one of the best warrior leaders and just an all-round great person.
On this time of reflection at the end of our nations time in Afghanistan I will definitely watch this interview.
Thank You to everyone who served over there and to those who made it back—do your best everyday to live for those who no longer can🇺🇸❤️🙏
