Today, one of our volunteers experienced a beautiful reminder of why compassionate presence matters.

While visiting a care community, they noticed a resident quietly reaching out a hand. The resident was frail, nonverbal, and sitting alone. Our volunteer stopped, took their hand, and offered a gentle hand massage.

As they moved from one hand to the other, something unexpected happened. The resident reached over with the hand that had just been massaged, placed it on top of the volunteer’s hand, and began gently squeezing it—as if returning the kindness.

In that simple moment, there was no need for words. Just connection. Just humanity. Just two people sharing a reminder that giving and receiving can happen at the very same time.

These are the moments that inspire our mission and remind us that every person has something meaningful to offer.

⭐ In this spotlight, let us introduce our Heartfelt Community volunteer, Donna! ⭐

One quality we admire in Donna is that she is very independent! She will find her way around the facility on her own, visiting some by request and others she merely comes across.

She is compassionate! One of the ways that quality shines the most is for a man with dementia-related behaviors that are barriers to communication. Donna is intentional about spending time with him, so that he is included in those we serve. Far more than just one elder, she looks out for every person!

And lastly, Donna is an advocate. If she notices a need, she speaks on it. She is considerate about our elders' space, their comfortability, their emotions, and their feedback. She recognizes their value.

Donna, we are so blessed that you are part of our team. Thank you for what you do for our elders and the friend you are to all of us. We treasure you!

We’re excited to announce the launch of a new Heartfelt Community summer volunteer team at Gloucester House Independent Living!

This morning, we gathered for our first visit, bringing Compassionate Touch®, conversation, and meaningful connection to residents. We’re especially grateful to welcome Lauren as our Summer Team Lead. She will be guiding the team during her time with us and helping create a warm, welcoming experience for everyone involved.

Our Gloucester House team will meet every other Tuesday at 10:00 AM to offer Compassionate Touch®, friendly visits, and moments of connection that remind our elders they are seen, valued, and loved.

Thank you, Lauren, for stepping into this leadership role and helping us continue Touching Lives, one visit at a time.

“When I first got here, I told the staff I didn’t like being called by my last name. Then I told them I didn’t like being called by my first name. So now, they use my nickname.”

It is true that personalized care starts with listening. From favorite activities to preferred names, getting to know the people who call the senior living communities home is one of the joys of what we do. 😊

Thank you, Sanders , for your positive example of elder care. Our volunteers love partnering with you to touch the lives of our dear friends one day at a time.

At Heartfelt Community, we're committed to making this service available to elders who might otherwise go without.

Thank you to our licensed massage therapists (LMTs) in the field who do this vital work. Your compassion and dedication bring comfort, connection, and dignity to the elders we serve every day.

Kate: I had the privilege of spending time with four wonderful residents today.

Ms. Iris is new to Gloucester House and 91 years young. She is a master quilter and proudly showed me the beautiful quilt she made for her bed, adorned with butterflies and irises. She also created treasured pillows from her late husband’s neckties. She hopes to bring her sewing machine and set up at a large table in the community room so she can continue working on her patterns. She was delightful to talk with and had so many stories to share.

Ms. Daisy was as sweet as could be, along with her 17-year-old dog. She wasn’t particularly talkative, but she clearly enjoyed the gentle hand massage and the quiet companionship.

Mr. Reed greeted me warmly when I introduced myself and offered a hand massage. Without hesitation, he said, “God sent you here! Please come in!” He had been experiencing pain, and it was wonderful to watch him relax and find comfort through touch. Originally from Richmond, he shared how much he loves living in Gloucester. For a little while, he was able to set his discomfort aside and simply enjoy the moment. He requested a neck massage, so I found Ginger, who was happy to help. I know that meant a great deal to him.

Ms. Rose, 94 years young, was my final visit of the day. A Gloucester native, she shared that her best friend from grade school still lives nearby. She has a contagious laugh and filled our conversation with joy. Listening to her, I could tell she has collected a lifetime of wonderful stories and memories.

I loved every minute spent with these beautiful souls today. Their resilience, wisdom, and warmth are such a gift. I am truly blessed to be part of Heartfelt Community and to witness these meaningful moments of connection. ❤️

“In caring for and spending time with elders, I have received far more than I ever expected — wisdom, kindness, and a greater understanding of what truly matters.”

Volunteering is often thought of as giving back, but so often it becomes a gift in return. We're grateful for volunteers who build meaningful connections, share their time, and discover the invaluable lessons that come from our elders. ❤️

[Ms. Grace] is a joy to be around. Today she told us the story of how she ended up in the senior living community. She said initially, she was very unhappy.

But one day, she told herself, “This is where I am, and I need to be happy about it.” And she’s been that way ever since!

Moving into a senior living community can be a major adjustment. What is helpful to many elders is bringing photos of their loved ones, decor, and sentimental items from home.

Because home has a new meaning to them now! And a visit from our Heartfelt Community volunteers reminds them of how much they are cared for.
