Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society is dedicated to saving the lives of homeless pets through adoption, medical care, and community programs.

We work to create a compassionate community where every animal is valued, cared for, and given a second chance. Our mission is to improve life for all animals by providing temporary shelter, compassionate care, community support and education. GMHS serves Gloucester, Mathews and Middlesex counties and is located at 6620 Jackson Lane, Gloucester VA 23061. Our objectives are to:

- Be a beacon in animal adoption, welfare, and advocacy.
- Provide care for stray and homeless animals.
- Be a driving force for animal education.
- Develop a culture of collaboration and service.
- Ensure financial sustainability.

Adoption update time!! ✨

"Three years ago, Joan and I decided we wanted a second dog. GMHS posted Mia Bella on Facebook. She was 9 years old and overweight and was on her second time being surrendered. We figured her adoption chances were low, so we went to see her. Raven got along with her so we adopted her on October 12, 2023. We couldn't have gotten a better dog. She's the calmest, gentlest, sweetest dog we've ever had. Raven loves her, our 4 cats accepted her, and she even roams the backyard in the middle of our chickens. She's 12 now and showing her age but we wouldn't trade her for anything. Thank you Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society."

These updates always warm our heart. 🐾💕We are so happy to hear that Mia Bella fit right in and is living her best life.

Calling all adventure lovers...Theodore is ready for miles of trails and endless fun!

Theodore would love a home full of outdoor adventures and love.💕

This energetic pup is looking for a family who wants a four-legged companion to join them for walks, adventures, playtime, and everything in between. Theodore may have plenty of energy, but he’s also a great listener! He already knows some basic commands and is eager to engage with his people, making him a wonderful pup to continue training and learning with.

One of Theodore’s favorite things? Other dogs! He does great with canine friends and would love opportunities to play, socialize, and burn off some of that energy with a buddy. October's cutest pumpkin is looking for a family to fall in love with: Meet Molly! 🎃✨

This beautiful orange girl has a heart just as golden as her fur! Sadly, Molly found herself in our care after her family had to move and could no longer keep her. While her world may have changed, one thing certainly hasn't, her endless amount of love to give!

Molly is an absolute sweetheart who wants nothing more than to share her affection with everyone she meets. She's the kind of kitty who can brighten even the gloomiest of days with her loving personality and gentle spirit.

Although Molly didn't plan on starting a new chapter, she's ready to make the best of it with a family who will love her just as much as she'll love them! Molly has already known what it's like to have a home, and now she's dreaming of finding her forever one.

"I enjoy working at Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society because I am able to do the hands-on, physical work which is something different from what I’m used to! Getting to care for animals every day makes it even more rewarding!"

Brandy is one of our Animal Care Attendants and has done an amazing job here at GMHS. Brandy is a great team player and goes above and beyond for the animals here. We are so very lucky to have her!

Volunteer of the month: David Costa! Lets say a big congratulations to David! 🥳

We are so grateful for all that he does to support our shelter! ❤️ From helping with animal transports and maintenance to caring for our lawn, walking dogs, and lending a hand at events, he is always willing to step up wherever he’s needed.

David's time, hard work, and dedication make such a difference in the lives of the animals in our care and in our shelter community. We truly couldn’t thank him enough for everything he does! 🐾
