The Animal Care Society would like to thank The Peary neighborhood. They hold a Crab Contest every year in memory of their late neighbor, JoAnn West. JoAnn was born and raised in Mathews. All the money raised is donated. Cristal and John Testerman, and Beth and Darren Orcutt are the organizers if anyone would like to donate or be a part of their Crab Contest next year. Big thanks to everyone who helped make such a needed donation for local animal rescues.

Help! Animal Care Society needs your support! We are a non-profit, all volunteer operated, resale shop - located at 248 Main St in Mathews - that has aided many local animal rescues since 1978. In 2024, we donated over $25,000 to seven different animal welfare groups. Now our lovely shop needs a new roof.
COST = $15,000
Please donate to ACS so we can cover the cost of replacing our roof without cutting back on our critical support for animals in need throughout Mathews and Gloucester counties.
Minimum donation for credit/debit = $10

Update: We have re-opened for our cats and small animals only. Our dogs will still be resting until later in the week.

Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society will be closed for the next week to all volunteers and the public due to an animal illness in the building. Our dedicated team will be here taking care of the pets and deep cleaning the shelter. We plan to re-open Friday, October 18, but will share any changes. We will still have the yard sale to benefit community cats this Saturday from 9 AM-2 PM since that will be held outside. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at 804-693-5520.
