“The Positive Place for Kids”
By Brian Meyer, Executive Director
Boys and Girls Club of Greater Dubuque

This is the 114th anniversary of the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Dubuque! The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Dubuque was one of the first 53 Clubs in the country and one of the first five West of the Mississippi River. Looking back in history when Kate Van Duzee started with a small group of boy

s in her house in 1900, we have come a long way. From several location changes for the boys, to the inception of the Girls ‘Club in 1973, to the merging of the two organizations in April, 1999 there have been many changes. With many changes, there has always been one thing that has remained constant, the Club is a fun place where kids can come and see a friendly face. No matter what the situation is in our member’s lives, they know when they come to the Club they can leave all their worries behind and have fun! The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Dubuque offers a variety of different activities and programs for school age kids to participate. The Club is a great place to come whether you wish to read a book, use a computer, participate in Brain Games, play a game in the Game Room, paint a plaque or color a picture in Arts & Crafts, or play a game of Dodge Ball in the gym. This is a small sampling of the many, many programs and activities offered everyday at the Boys & Girls Club. Scholarships are available to any eligible boy or girl who cannot afford our $30.00 yearly membership fee!!! We would like to extend an invitation to everyone to come and see what we have to offer the youth of our community.

Jason from Dubuque County Conservation taught our elementary school members about composting today and helped us start our very own compost bin here at the club! He led them in a discussion about waste, the importance of soil, and leaving the world a better place than we found it.

He used an apple to help them visualize how much of the Earth is topsoil, let them snack on the apple, and then added it to the compost when they were done. It was a very full-circle lesson and we’re so grateful to have his knowledge at our disposal!

STEAM FREE DAY! Our kids were asked to create anything they wanted from our STEM cart, play with Robo Wunderkind to form and code any robots they chose, or play some mind games! It was a great way to see their creative minds at work!

Day 1 of hosting Vision To Learn Iowa was a huge success! They offered free screenings and exams to all of the kiddos we had at the club and already agreed to provide 10 FREE pairs of prescription glasses to our members that need them! We are incredibly grateful for this resource and the effort they’re putting in to our members and community.

They plan to come back tomorrow to provide more screenings and exams to our members that weren’t here today. They’ll then return one last time in about 3 weeks to deliver the glasses. How amazing is that!?

As part of our Diplomas2Degrees program we visited University of Dubuque today with our high schoolers! We brought lunch to eat on campus and enjoy the beautiful weather, were given a tour, and learned so much about college life and UD. We even got ice cream at the end of our visit to celebrate. We’re so grateful they welcomed us!

Emily from Carnegie-Stout Public Library read to our 1st and 2nd graders today and then taught them how to bling their very own book! She also helped them sign up for the summer reading program so they can achieve their reading goals throughout the summer. We always LOVE when Emily visits and the creative crafts she brings!
