Indigenous Peoples are still here
This Indigenous Peoples Day, we recognize the Indigenous nations and communities whose histories, cultures, languages, and traditions continue to shape the places we call home.
On Turtle Island, Indigenous identity does not belong to just one country, one border, or even one continent. Indigenous peoples and nations have always been connected across North and South America, and Indigenous communities continue to thrive around the world.
Here in Michigan, we honor the Waganakising Odawa (Little Traverse Bay Bands), Anishinaabe, Potawatomi, Ojibwe, and other Indigenous nations whose people and histories remain part of this land.
We also recognize that this is not only about history. Indigenous communities continue to fight for their land, water, and right to determine what happens to their communities. From protecting sacred lands and natural resources to opposing development that threatens OUR water and OUR environment.
The struggle continues. So does the strength, resilience, and resistance.
Inside DHDC, in Waawiyaatanong, the Anishinaabe word for the Detroit area, we are proud to have “Detroit’s Roots,” a mural by Hadassah Greensky Meshekey, Hadassah GreenSky Meshekey ✨⚡️✨ , a Waganakising Odawa (Little Traverse Bay Bands) artist from Detroit.
Her work, “Migizi miinawaa gichi wiinaange,” meaning “Eagle and the Condor,” depicts the Eagle and Condor prophecy, a story of unity between Native peoples of North and South America.
This piece is a reminder that Indigenous peoples are not only part of our history.
This piece reminds us that Indigenous peoples are not only part of our history. Indigenous peoples continue to create, protect, lead, and carry forward traditions, knowledge, and movements that honor responsibility to the next seven generations.
