How much more can you see when the sky gets truly dark?

Mi-Sci staff captured these views at Headlands International Dark Sky Park, where darker skies make faint stars much easier to see.

Artificial light creates skyglow that can wash out some of the dimmer objects overhead. Getting away from bright city lights gives your eyes a chance to pick out much more of the night sky.

Try it yourself the next time you’re somewhere dark: give your eyes time to adjust, keep bright phone screens to a minimum and spend a few minutes simply looking up.

Want to keep exploring? Come take a closer look at the night sky in the Penske Planetarium at Mi-Sci. Find current shows and showtimes: https://www.mi-sci.org/now-showing/

Your brain is about to get a workout.

WSU THINK Lab is joining us at Mi-Sci each month for hands-on activities exploring how your brain, senses and nervous system work.

From upside-down goggles and human brain specimens to brain waves and reaction-time challenges, there will be something new to explore each month.

During a lunar eclipse, you can actually watch Earth’s shadow move across the Moon.

A lunar eclipse happens when Earth moves between the Sun and Moon, casting its shadow across the Moon’s surface.

During a partial lunar eclipse, only part of the Moon passes through the darkest part of Earth’s shadow, creating the darkened section you see moving across its surface.

Did you get outside to see the eclipse on August 27? Our next opportunity to view a partial eclipse from Detroit is Jan. 12, 2028.

Did you catch the Northern Lights over Michigan last November?

Auroras begin with activity on the Sun. Charged particles travel toward Earth and interact with our planet’s magnetic field and gases high in the atmosphere, creating the glowing colors we see in the night sky.

Auroras are usually most visible closer to the poles, but strong space weather can push the display farther south — sometimes far enough for us to see it right here in Detroit.

Did you see the aurora that night? Tell us about it!

What can dissection teach us about the science of life?

During Insides Out, a weekend dissection series at the Michigan Science Center, Mi-Sci educators explore mammal anatomy through live dissections and explain how organ systems work.

Find Insides Out in the Learning Launchpad on Saturdays and Sundays from 2:00–4:00 p.m.

This series is proudly sponsored by our friends at Medline.

Medline’s community presence increasingly includes sponsoring educational attractions for kids at local STEAM museums.

This time, we’re helping the Michigan Science Center in Detroit open minds by literally opening hearts at its new “Insides Out” exhibit. http://ms.spr.ly/6187adyVc
