Staying up to date on COVID vaccines for your family is still one of the best things you can do to maintains your health.

The coronavirus vaccine reduced the risk of major cardiovascular events linked to covid-19 by about 40 percent, according to a new study.

The findings suggest that such benefits observed in earlier studies have persisted for years. https://wapo.st/4a4nX3a

🍎 No child should have to learn on an empty stomach.

Michigan’s School Meals Program has helped ensure that students across our state have access to free breakfast and lunch, reducing hunger, supporting academic success, and easing financial pressure on families.

Now lawmakers have an opportunity to make this commitment permanent by codifying the program into state law. Students, parents, and schools shouldn’t have to wonder each year whether this vital support will continue.

SB 784/785 (Senator Dayna Polehanki)to codify universal school meals will be heard by the Senate Education Committee today at 1:15pm.

At MiPASS, we believe that when children’s basic needs are met, they are better able to learn, grow, and thrive. We encourage the Senate Education Committee to move this legislation forward and help ensure that every Michigan student has access to the nutrition they need to succeed.

Because feeding kids shouldn’t be controversial. It’s an investment in Michigan’s future.

The school year comes to an end, but the work of our conscientious and driven parent advocates never stops when it comes to safer school spaces!

Safe Homes, Safe Schools is Michigan's law requiring that school districts share resources on secure firearm storage with parents and caregivers, as prepared by our state Department of Health and Human Services.

The End Gun Violence Michigan Education Team is hosting a Zoom training on our work on Safe Homes, Safe Schools next Monday, June 8th, at 7:30pm as part of Silence the Violence month of action

Securely storing fi****ms is an essential and responsible way we can prevent our kids from accessing unsecured fi****ms, and harming themselves or someone else. But, there's nothing in place to make sure that schools *actually* share these resources with parents. Help us make sure school districts share these resources across the state!

MiPass supports codifying free School meals into law so that the year to year swings of budget priorities won't prevent all students being fed at school.

Call your elected representatives and let them know you support this proposal as well!

Dont forget to sign up for The Gander's live streamed town hall conversation tonight at 6:30pm about the impacts and harms caused by digital platforms.

From The Gander:

"How are social media platforms and big tech companies impacting kids, families, and communities, and what can policymakers do about it?

Join The Gander on May 21 for a livestreamed town hall conversation featuring Michigan leaders, experts, advocates, and parents directly impacted by the harms of digital platforms.

The conversation, moderated by The 'Gander's chief political correspondent Kyle Kaminski, will explore how platform design, corporate decisions, and policy failures are affecting youth mental health, family well-being, and community safety, while examining what meaningful accountability could look like moving forward.

Centering parent and youth perspectives, the conversation will connect lived experiences with the companies responsible and the policies that have enabled these harms to persist.

Featured Speakers:

Mallory McMorrow, Michigan State Senator

Dr. Jenny Radesky, Board-Certified Developmental Behavioral Pediatrician and Division Director of Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics at Michigan Medicine

Charay Gadd, advocate and community leader

Mariella Ma, State Lead for Design It For Us

FACT: Over one-third of adolescents in a firearm-owning household report being able to access a loaded firearm within 5 minutes.

Unintentional shootings are far more likely to occur when children and teens are home from school. As summer approaches, it’s more important than ever to remember to secure all fi****ms in homes and vehicles, and ASK about the presence of unsecured guns in homes, cabins, and vehicles where your children will be present.

Michigan law states that all fi****ms must be securely stored - unloaded, locked in a locked container or with a gun lock - when minors are present, or could be present in both homes and vehicles.

MiPASS asks ALL parents & caregivers to take time to review information on secure storage & make the commitment to ASK about gun storage practices where children will be present this summer.

Yet again, research shows that securely storing fi****ms — either locked in a gun safe or unloaded and secured with a gun lock — saves lives, especially the lives of children and teens. Improperly secured fi****ms increase the risk of su***de, unintentional injury and death, and mass shootings.

This staggering number (7 million) has increased significantly over the past five years, indicating either a major surge in gun sales and/or a decline in responsible firearm storage practices.

If you have a child and/or teenager in your home, please ensure that all fi****ms are stored locked and separate from ammunition.

In Michigan, our secure storage law requires fi****ms to be secured in a locked gun safe or stored unloaded with a cable or trigger lock when minors are or could be present in the home or vehicle. Minors include teenagers.

MiPASS fought hard to pass this law, and the work continues in implementation and secure storage education for parents and caregivers is provided in perpetuity through the Safe Homes Safe Schools law, which requires school districts to share education materials and links about secure storage with parents on an annual basis.

Check the comments for ways YOU can help ensure your district is doing its part to reduce firearm su***des, injury, death, and mass shootings. This is a tangible way YOU can contribute to the movement. 💪

The new study in JAMA Network Open also finds that more parents leave their guns loaded and unlocked when they have teenagers, despite the fact that su***de risk goes up for this age group.
