For our May program Ikenobo Instructor Pat Langs taught a freestyle lesson on grasses.

Pat invited members to use bear grass in either a naturalistic or a stylistic manner.

She suggested a suiban for a more naturalistic style or another vessel of choice to be used for a stylized arrangement.

She also suggested bringing 3-5 flowers and another material of choice as an accent.

Pat and our members came up with some very beautiful arrangements!

For our April morning program Ikenobo Professor Cheryl Linck presented a workshop focusing on spring branches.

In the Ikenobo school, Kimono (woody material) is commonly used in arrangements. In fact, there are certain one material styles which incorporate only one variety of branch material.

For the afternoon program Sensei Leslie Rosinski continued using branches in her arrangements, and invited members to shift the focus to the container- baskets!

In conjunction with the NCECA Conference (National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts), members of our chapter and the Ann Arbor chapter offered a demonstration and exhibit at the Scarab Club in Detroit.

Ceramic artist Terri Marra curated the vessels and our members were challenged to create arrangements in them.

Senseis Leslie Rosinski, Liz Larwa and Cheryl Linck offered a demonstration. Detroit members Cynthia Kidd, Alice Johnson, and Kathleen Wilson created arrangements for the exhibit. All the arrangers shared their thoughts and feelings around the creation of their pieces and how they worked with the vessels.

The exhibit was on display March 25 to March 28 in the upper level of the Scarab Club’s Artists Lounge.
