A BRIEF HISTORY

The Detroit Writers' Guild—originally the Detroit Black Writers' Guild—is a nonprofit organization located in Detroit, Michigan. Moore and her 9-year-old daughter, Peggy Sue. The Moore’s concern, at that time, was the lack of books for black children written by black authors in the

Detroit Public School System. Realizing a void existed in the number of black writers and publishers available, the Guild was formed. The Detroit Writers' Guild has grown over the decades and now invites a diversity of community writers who are making a difference with their work in Detroit and its surrounding neighborhoods. The DWGuild is back in 2017 with renewed energy and vision for impacting literary arts in all of its extraordinary forms and mediums. OUR MISSION

DWGuild's vision is to launch new writers into commercial markets and support emerging and established writers as they build their professional platforms. Our mission is to provide spaces and events that

-bring poets, authors, screenwriters, and songwriters together to celebrate their work in all of its stages;

-showcase these works through live performances and by promoting multimedia publications of books, individual pieces, videos, audios, and anything else our writers and artists dream up;

-improve and reinvigorate literacy awareness in the Metro Detroit area;

-serve our community through the promotion of history and activities that enrich the lives of the under-served, homeless, and military veterans. The Detroit Writers' Guild became incorporated on January 6, 1984 and received its 501 (c)(3) tax exempt status on August 29, 1986. Since that time, the DWGuild's membership has grown to over 600 individuals from across the United States. As a direct result of their association with DWGuild, several members have been picked up by commercial publishers or gone into self-publication. DWGuild and its members have published close to 100 books representing all genres. Our books are sold nationally and internationally with orders from both England and Germany. As we rebuild in 2017, we hope to establish regular brick-and-mortar meetings each month. Watch our homepage and calendar of events for

-workshops focused on poetry, creative writing, self-publishing, computer literacy, screenwriting, playwriting, professional development, and desktop publishing;

-creative readings, performances, and book signings happening in Detroit and Metro Detroit areas;

-social and fundraising galas that allow members to celebrate literary arts while pooling the necessary resources to impact change in the under-served community. As of this year, the DWGuild has completed over 33 years of service to the Metro Detroit area. How will you help us keep this spirit alive and well?
