About our Guest Clergy
The Rev'd Joyce Matthews joined the staff of Christ Church Cranbrook in 2005 and served as an Associate Rector until her retirement in 2018. Joyce currently serves on the Diocesan Council and has served on several other committees for the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan: Vice President of Whitaker Institute Board, Healing Racism trainer and the President of the Standing Committee.

Joyce was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. After graduating from U of M where she graduated with distinction with Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Education, she gained a wealth of experience in healthcare. Her breadth of knowledge in the respiratory therapy field earned her the opportunity to be the director of respiratory Therapy programs at several area hospitals. Pastor Matthews has also been an educator at the University of Detroit and Highland Park Community College and part of the adjunct faculty for the University of Michigan School of Education and Wayne State School of Anesthesiology. She received her Master in Divinity degree from Seabury Western Theological Seminary in 2005.

Joyce is married to Lauriant and they have two daughters, Renee, a medical doctor in Chicago, Illinois and Alycia, a manufacturing operations manager for the DuPont Corporation in Valdosta, Georgia. Joyce and Lauriant reside in Farmington Hills, Michigan.

About our Guest Clergy
Before accepting the call to start All.together Campus Ministry, Pastor Ben Adams spent ten years in Chicago, where he graduated from the Lutheran School of Theology and then went on to serve seven years in campus ministry. That experience helped shape the focus of Pastor Ben’s ministry, which is about building powerful relationships, extending grace to all, and making space for equitable, inclusive, counter-cultural community to grow. Outside of campus ministry, Pastor Ben enjoys baking sourdough, brewing kombucha, cultivating houseplants, bird watching, biking, skateboarding, listening to records, playing his ukulele, or just hanging out with his wife Tara, their three children.

All.together Campus Ministry is a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan, the Southeast Michigan Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Dearborn, the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, the Lutheran Campus Ministry Network, and the Young Adult and Campus Ministries of the Episcopal Church. “We exist to create a radically inclusive, accessible, creative, just, joyous, loving, and graceful community of faith. The Reverend Dr. Dean Aponte-Safe hails from Cannon Falls, Minnesota. He earned the Bachelor of Arts degree from Waldorf University (2012), the Master of Divinity from Luther Seminary (2017), Master of Sacred Theology degree from the Chicago Theological Seminary (2019), and the Doctor of Ministry from the Pacific School of Religion (2025).

He was ordained into the tradition of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in July of 2017 and served calls in Southeastern Minnesota, and as interim pastor to the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation in Ann Arbor, Michigan, before joining the staff of the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan, where he serves as Missioner for Rural and Small Church Vitality. Dean recently contracted with Fortress Press to write his first book, “In the Middle of Everywhere: A Q***r Love Letter to the Rural Church,” slated for publication in Autumn 2027.

Outside of Church service and writing, Dean is spouse to Gerardo, an Episcopal priest. He is a proud dog dad to a three-year-old golden retriever, Finnegan, and enjoys cooking, reading, writing, and playing the third movement of Beethoven’s “Moonlight” Sonata at the piano. Traveling highlights include an off-grid farm in interior Alaska; spending a year in the North Cascade Mountains of Washington State; working with Lutheran congregations in central Tanzania; visiting family in Puerto Rico; and companioning with the monastic community of Taizé, France.
