💚 A Grant in Action: Good Samaritan School

During our Fall 2025 grant cycle, the Defiance Area Foundation awarded a $5,000 grant to the Defiance County Board of Developmental Disabilities/Good Samaritan School to help update the countertops in the Good Samaritan School cafeteria.

Today, that grant is helping create a safer, cleaner and more efficient space for preparing and serving meals to students.

The updated countertops allow Good Samaritan School to better maintain high standards of safety and cleanliness while providing nutritious meals to the students they serve each day.

Jenna Pepper, Communications Manager, shared:
“Your continued investment in our community and in the students we serve truly makes a meaningful difference. We are incredibly grateful for your partnership and support.”

This is what a grant in action looks like. 💚 Sometimes community impact happens through large, visible projects. Other times, it happens through practical improvements that make an important space safer and more welcoming for the people who use it every day.

We’re grateful to the Defiance County Board of Developmental Disabilities and Good Samaritan School for the work they do to serve students and families throughout our community.

What does it mean to leave a legacy?

A legacy isn't only what you leave behind. It's the values you live, the causes you care about, and the difference you choose to make in the lives of others.

At the Defiance Area Foundation, we have the privilege of seeing legacies take shape every day. Some begin with a family creating a fund. Others grow through years of giving to causes close to their hearts. And some are planned today through a future gift that will continue supporting Defiance County for generations.

Over the coming months, we're going to be sharing stories from local families who have thought intentionally about one important question:

What do I want my legacy to be?

We hope their stories inspire you to think about yours.

Local Defiance resident and Defiance Area Foundation Donor Advised Fund holder, Shelley Detwiler recently donated three park benches to the Defiance County Reservoir. These benches, installed by Mason Doda as a part of his Eagle Scout Project, can be found on the lower walking path.

💚 Have you heard of a QCD?

A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) is a way for individuals age 70½ or older to give directly from an eligible IRA to a qualified charitable organization. Because the gift is transferred directly from the IRA to the charity, the distribution may be excluded from taxable income and can also count toward all or part of a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD), when applicable.

_____________
So where does the Defiance Area Foundation come in?

A QCD can be a meaningful way to support charitable work right here in Defiance County. Through the Foundation, donors can connect their generosity with causes and organizations that matter to them while creating an impact close to home.

If you are considering a QCD, talk with your financial or tax advisor about whether this giving option is right for you, then contact the Defiance Area Foundation to discuss how your charitable goals can make a difference in our community.

💚 Your IRA can do more than support your retirement. It can support your community, too!

💚 A Grant in Action: Children’s Lantern

In March 2025, the Defiance Area Foundation awarded a $2,500 grant to Children’s Lantern to support its Kinship Lantern of Hope program.

Today, we’re seeing what that support has made possible.

One of the kinship families Children’s Lantern serves is a grandmother raising her two grandsons without support from their parents. Through the Kinship Lantern of Hope program, Children’s Lantern has been able to help provide this family with clothing, toiletries and a summer pool pass, along with additional support through their Christmas Blessing Basket and Back to School Bash.

Their team shared with us:

“This grant helps tremendously with our ministry to serve and bless our families.”

This is why we love following up on the grants we award. A $2,500 grant becomes more than a number. It becomes school supplies, shoes, clothing, everyday essentials, summer memories and meaningful support for a family right here in our community.

We’re grateful to Children's Lantern for the important work they continue to do for local children and families. 💚
